  17. How can I support my child? I didn’t even do GCSEs – how can I help her? Every time I ask him: “Do you have homework?” he says no He says: “My teachers say it’s too early to revise” Is this true? She claims she revises best on her bed listening to music, I don’t believe her. There are a million and one websites and revision guides, how do I know which one to use? She say’s: “Revision is a waste of time”, when she is in an exam her mind goes blank.

  18. Importance of parents “The more parents are engaged in the education of their children, the more likely their children are to succeed in the education system. Parental engagement is one of the key factors in securing higher students achievement” DFE Research Report 156, September 2011.

  19. Parents role in revision • You know your child best – play to their strengths. • Be the “Go-between” from home to school (also check parents newsletter). • Agree the rules for revision and ensure there is a balance between “work” and “play” and stick to the rules. • Provide them with the materials and environment needed for effective revision. • Create a revision timetable. • Study buddy: Show an interest in the subject they are revising – test them on what they have been revising. • Familiarise yourself with coursework deadlines to avoid a mad rush at the end.

  20. Coursework & practical exams • Coursework/practical exams are “marks in the bag” before you sit the exam. • Make sure you maximise these marks. • Subjects that contain coursework: • Drama – worth 60% • Music – worth 60% • Food Technology – worth 60% • Technology Product and design – worth 60% • PE – Coursework and practical - worth 40% • German speaking exam – worth 25%

  21. A place to study • A quiet place at home. • Has plenty of light, your eyes will get tired when revising. • Have the correct equipment. • Quiet music on in the background can help some people focus. • DO NOT have the TV on or have your mobile on you. • Computers and other media devices can be a • great help with revision. BUT they can also be a distraction too.

  22. Healthy body = Healthy mind • Sleep • Drink lots of water • Eat a balanced diet • Exercise • Good posture whilst revising • Avoid too much… • Chocolate, coke, caffeine and foods with lots of additives. • These substances interfere with the way your brain functions and can make you nervous.

  23. Why revise? 80% of knowledge is lost within 24 hours.

  24. Memory

  25. How not to revise Reading vast amounts of information at once. Copying out vast amounts of information from books. Revising material that you already know. 36. It’s nearly exam time. Are you prepared? Do any of the following sound familiar?

  37. I feel anxious or overwhelmed because I don’t know where to start.

  38. I revise topics I already know rather than tackling harder work.

  39. I use the same revision methods, often reading notes over and over.

  40. My mind wanders and I sometimes get bored revising.

  41. If I get stuck at home I just give up. I don’t have anyone to ask for help.

  42. Are you stuck in a revision comfort zone?

  43. What is GCSEPod? • Covers the majority of subjects • Mapped to our exam boards • Over 6,000 audio-visual Pods (3-5 mins) • 50,000+ Question Bank • Students can create playlists • GCSEPod can be used on any device. • All Y11 students have access for FREE

  44. On average, students who use GCSEPod achieve 2 grades higher across subjects than predicted. Evidence suggests over the whole academic year high usage has a greater impact than high usage over the exam period.
