  2. Childhood • Steel was born on September 11,1847 near Gosport in Owen County. • Steele did his first painting when he was 5 years old during his boyhood.

  3. Family • Steele married a lady named Elizabeth Lakin. • Steele and Elizabeth had 3 children.

  4. Why he is famous • Steele was famous because of all his beautiful paintings. • Many famous people like James Whitcomb Riley sat and let him paint portraits of them. • Steele was a supremely talented artist.

  5. Awards Honors • Steele received first prize at an exhibition. • He was chosen an associate of the national Academy of design.

  6. Death • In 1899 Elizabeth died. • Steele died in 1926.
