1. The Lewis & Clark expedition By Jonah F. Song

2. Thomas Jefferson purchased the Louisiana territory from France for fifteen million dollars for approximately four cents an acre. This doubled the size of America and opened it up for westward expansion.

3. William Clark was born on August,1st 1770. He was invited by Lewis to join The Corps of Discovery on the expedition. Lewis was born on August 18th 1774. He had known Thomas Jefferson since he was five. He was Jefferson’s secretary. Together they led the Corps of Discovery.

4. Thomas Jefferson had many goals that were made prior to the expedition. The main priorities were to make Native American friends, open the West up to trade, find a Northwest passage, and find new species of plant life and animal life.

5. Lewis, Clark, and the Corps encountered • many problems on their journey. They needed • many supplies for their journey. They • brought things such as… • 150 yards of cloth • 5 pounds of fishing hooks and fishing lines • 30 steels for striking fire • 3 bushels of salt • 30 chisels • 30 pliers • 193 pounds of portable soup • 8 mosquito curtains • 30 hatchets • 30 whetstones • 15 gunslings Hatchet

6. The Corps of Discovery went through 11 states. These states were Illinois, Missouri, South Dakota, North Dakota, Wyoming, Idaho, and Oregon. This adventure took two and a half years

7. Sacagawea was a very crucial member of the expedition. She knew the land. She also helped communicate with the other natives, and when their boat was sinking she saved all of their important supplies. The expedition may not have been possible if Sacagawea didn’t join the corps on their expedition.

8. During the expedition Lewis and Seaman would go ahead of the corps and navigate. During this time they would also study new species of plants and animals. They found new species such as… • Black Greasewood • Indian Tobacco • Prairie Dog • White Sturgeon

9. The only death After two years, four months, only one man died, Sergeant Charles Floyd. He died of a burst appendix. Sadly Lewis and Clark had only brought medicine, not a doctor. Nobody in the crew had the skills to treat or remove the appendix. R.I.P. Sgt. Charles Floyd

10. While the corps were in Clatsop territory, three Clatsop Natives tried to steal captain Lewis’s dog. The three Clatsops tried to persuade Seaman by feeding him beaver meat. Luckily Seaman held his ground and three privates came to save him.

11. Privates Pierre Cruzatte and George Gibson While the ship was sailing down the Missouri River, Lewis and Pierre Cruzatte went on shore to navigate and get lunch. While they were hunting Lewis shoots a buffalo and went to get it. Private Cruzatte mistook him for a buffalo and accidently shot Lewis. The musket ball went through Lewis’ rear end. Amazingly enough, the musket ball didn’t injure any major arteries. Cruzatte was not punished because Lewis thought it was his fault for taking a half blind near sighted person hunting with him
