Math Dance Introduction

Chaperones are Gary Hank, Scott Yerger, ,and Becky Suydam

Let’s rock!

Task #1: You are a DJ that must create 1 hour worth of music for a Math Dance.

You will keep a running time of your songs.

Task #2: You will find the measures of central tendencies of your data.

In simple terms, the mean, median, mode, and range of your data.

Task #3: You will change the lyrics to a song of choice that will have a correlation

to a math concept.

Let’s Rock!

You are the DJ.

*Your task is to create 1 hour of music for the Math Dance.

*On the spreadsheet provided on the next page, list the song titles, artists, year recorded, genres, and time of each song.

*Each song must have a correlation to mathematics, either in the title or the artist. (Check out myexamples)

*No song may be over 7 minutes long.

*You may not use more than 2 songs from each artist.

* You must keep a running time of the songs.

Example

OK, now I have to get MEAN!

(and median, mode, and range)

Now that the music for the dance is complete, find themean, mode, median, and range for the years. Do the same steps for the times.

Example

Dr.Ufigure

Go to worksheet #1

Page 7Worksheet #2 Measures of Central Tendencies

Did you follow Dr. Ufigure’s directions?

OK, Let’s start with the years of your songs. Did you have any from the 60’s? What, No Beatles? That’s ok.

Use the space provided to list the years. Remember 1st to last.

The Median of the years is_________________.

The Mode of the years is_______________.

The Mean of the years is _______________.

The Range of the years are __________________.

Lets; do the same for the times. List the times short to long. Do you have to change them to seconds?

The Median of the time is_________________.

The Mode of the time is_______________.

The Mean of the time is _______________.

The Range of the time are __________________.

Now let’s create a new Math song.

Think of one of your favorite songs. Think of the lyrics to the song. Change the lyrics so the song is now an official Math song. Here is a nice site for lyrics.

(sung to the tune 8675309 Jenny, Jenny by Tommy Tutone)

Hey!

Circle, circle, who can I turn to?

I need to find the distance around you.

I never found the length of a curve before.

‘Till I saw your number on the board.

I need to multiply.

Circle, circle, you're the shape for me.

To find your area would make me so happy.

I tried the method before but I got nowhere.

I need to multiply.

I got it, I got it.

I will remember ‘till I die.

I got it, I got it.

In the formulas, you just multiply by pi!

But there's always more to find.

For the answers I need I can always turn to pi.
