  1. Cutting Fat on the Farm Saving money with efficiencyRichard Stroh, Bonneville Power Administration Harvesting Clean Energy Conference Boise, ID October 24, 2011

  2. BPA Agricultural Program Offerings • Irrigation • Farms and Ranches • Greenhouses • Turf • Livestock Confinement • Utility Transformers

  3. Irrigation Efficiency Programs • Pump Testing (Irrigation System Analysis) • Scientific Irrigation Scheduling • Variable Speed Drives for Turbine Pumps • Hardware Rebates and System Upgrades • Rebates for Green Motor Rewinds • Rebates for Premium Efficient Motors

  4. What is a Pump Test • A measurement of the flow, pressure and lift produced by the pump and input power of the motor. • Efficiency = x 100 Power output Power input

  5. Collect Nameplate Data Motor Nameplate Pump Nameplate

  6. Prepare Pipe for Measurements

  7. Measure Flow and Pressure

  8. Measure Lift

  9. Measure Power

  10. Results and Recommendations

  11. Utility Rebates • Sprinkler Equipment Hardware • Variable Frequency Drives for • Vertical Turbine Pumps • Premium Efficient Motors • CALL YOUR ELECTRIC UTILITY FOR DETAILS

  12. Utility Financial Assistance (Example 1) After Intake: 6” Steel Pipeline Discharge: 6” Steel Pipeline Flow: 485 gpm Discharge Pressure: 59.0 psi Delivery Pressure: 59.0 psi Power: 30.3 hp Before Intake: 4” Flex hose Discharge: 4” Portable Aluminum Mainline Flow: 399 gpm Discharge Pressure: 78.1 psi Delivery Pressure: 58.5 psi Power: 31.1 hp

  13. Added Wheel Line to System Annual Savings: 7,745 kWh Incentive: $1,936 Project Cost: $4,754 33% Savings

  14. Utility Financial Assistance (Example 2) After New Water Source: 200 hp and 150 hp canal pumps and mainline to connect to existing system. Annual Savings:493,637 kWh Incentive: $145,352 Project Cost: $396,058 Before Original Water Source: 125 hp and 400 hp deep well pumps – 400 ft lift.

  15. Scientific Irrigation Scheduling Applies to systems with greater capacity than what is needed to meet normal crop needs.

  16. Scientific Irrigation Scheduling • Fixed deemed incentive per acre • Requires weekly data and soil moisture measurement • Crop type, acreage, energy savings and scheduling costs must be submitted to BPA at the end of each irrigation season

  17. Livestock Confinement Operations • Dairies • Hog Farms • Cattle Feedlots ▼ Links Email & IM Direct link HTML code IMG code ▶ Photo info ▾ Loading...

  18. Transformer De-energization • Incentive to electric utilities that currently do not disconnect irrigation pump transformers during the off-season.

  19. Measures • HVAC System Controls • Heat pumps and solar water heating • Heat exchangers • Lighting • VFD’s for vacuum pumps • Freeze resistant watering tanks

  20. On the Horizon • Update VFD offering • Turf smart controllers (municipal parks, cemeteries, golf courses, residential and commercial) • Irrigation system upgrades for nurseries and greenhouses • LEPA (Low Energy Precision Application)

  21. Variable Frequency Drives (VFD) • Ending two year pilot project ($/hp) • Turbine pumps only • Program will be updated April 2012

  22. Turf Smart Controllers • Finishing up final year of pilot • Will evaluate the data to determine measure possibility, hopefully available in April • Multi-sector measure: Small Ag farms, Residential/commercial landscaping and lawns, governmental/utility

  23. Irrigation System Upgrades - Nurseries/Greenhouses • Considering investigating the need for system upgrades for nurseries and greenhouses similar to pivots, wheel and hand line systems

  24. LEPA • Will be evaluating various demonstration sites to determine effectiveness on different soil/climate/crop conditions • Has the potential to save considerable water and energy on the right crop • LEPA uses very low pressures (6 - 10 psi at the nozzle). This, along with the fact that less water per acre needs to be pumped, can lead to substantial energy savings. • Could be the next generation of sprinkler upgrades
