  3. Property Protection is a crime prevention program that is operated by McMaster Security Services and Environmental and Occupational Health Support Services This program is designed to promote the use of Operation Provident and Operation Identification What is Property Protection?

  4. Proper Identification of your property Helps police identify and return property This works whether your property is stolen of lost Discourages theft Marked property is difficult to dispose and can easily be traced Operation Identification Operation Identification is a program designed to discourage theft of valuables Operation Identification has dramatically reduced profit derived from stolen good

  5. Responsibilities: Employees and Students need to take every precaution reasonable to protect the moveable assets and equipment of the University Moveable Assets Policy Sec 3.3

  6. To provide a system for the identification and inventory of University equipment and moveable assets and incentives for the implementation and maintenance of loss prevention practices directed at protecting such property from theft. Moveable Assets Policy Purpose: Sec. 1.1

  7. Moveable assets of property having a value in excess of $1000.00 shall be marked with a Provident Number provided by Security Services Procedures Provident Numbers Sec. 4.1

  8. McMaster’s Number OP5 046 800 Each department has their own sub number added to the end of the Operation Provident Number. McMaster Security maintains this list. You can confirm your number by contacting the Crime Prevention Office at ext. 26060 What Number Should I Use?

  9. Use an electric engraver to mark all of your property. If your department does not have one, you can borrow one from Security Services. You should mark the item in two spots: one visible and one hidden Record the make, model and serial numbers of your property and keep this in a safe place What Do I Do?

  10. Date inventory confirmed Item description Model number Year Supplier Location Purchase Price Funding Source Provident Number Procedures Moveable assets and equipment having a value in excess of $1000.00 shall be inventoried. Information required for the inventory shall include: Sec. 4.2

  11. Keep moveable assets and equipment secure by: Routinely check status of assets Properly keying and locking doors Storing portable items such as laptops and cameras in locked cabinets Maintain departmental control of keys Maintain a key inventory and confirm quarterly Report suspicious behaviours to Security immediately Reporting missing equipment immediately to Security Services ext. 24281 Protection of Assets and Equipment Sec. 4.3

  12. Security Services has created two areas to assist with securing of belongings. Sgt of Crime Prevention Will conduct a security review of your area and offer assistance specific to your needs Technology Administrator Will consult and assist in the installation of security technologies in your area What to do in your specific department?

  13. Door card readers Elimination of keys Control who is in your area and when Alarm system on doors if key or other mode of entry is used PC Tabs Electronic system on anything that can be moveable that alerts security when it is moved What kind of Security Technologies

To protect University equipment and ensure insurance coverage the following steps shall be taken before prior to relocating equipment to an off campus location The signing authority must authorize The equipment must be identified as Mac property and marked with Operation Provident A signed letter of permission must accompany the equipment in case stopped by Security Use of University Equipment off Campus Sec. 4.4

  15. The property Insurance deductible for loss of moveable assets and equipment is $100,000.00 Compensation for loss by theft below the deductible will be paid out of the University general funds, only when the following conditions are met: The missing equipment is on an inventory list The missing equipment is marked with Operation Provident There is evidence of forcible entry or forcible removal The property is replaced with an identical or equivalent item Compensation for Loss of Property Sec. 4.5

  16. The property Insurance deductible for loss of moveable assets and equipment is $100,000.00 Compensation for loss by theft below the deductible will be paid out of the University’s general funds, only when the following conditions are met: The loss is collateral damage due to an accident or failure of a University system The loss results from fire The loss results from vandalism associated with forced entry The property is replaced with an identical or equivalent item Compensation for Loss by Damage Sec. 4.6

  17. If you suspect a Burglary • Don’t go inside • Call security at 24281 • Do not touch anything or clean anything • up before security clears the scene • Make a list of what is missing

  18. You can borrow an Engraver from Security Services by attending the 2nd floor of E.T. Clarke Center - first come first served Engravers can be purchased through EOHSS Don’t Have an Engraver
