  1. Biological Classification

  2. What is taxonomy? • The science of naming organisms (i.e. plants, animals, protists, fungi and monerans) and assigning them to groups. • Tends to be guided by evolutionary relationships.

  3. TWO Important Features of Biological Classification • Classification systems assign a universally accepted name to each organism. • Organisms are placed into groups that have real biological meaning.

  4. Classification Groups Arranged in order from LARGEST (or most diverse) to SMALLEST (or least diverse): • Kingdom • Phylum • Class • Order • Family • Genus • Species

  5. Memory Trick • The following is a mnemonic to remember the classification system (in order): Kids play catch over Farmer Green’s shack.

  6. Information About Each Classification Group

  7. Information About Each Classification Group (Continued)

  8. The Naming System • developed by Linnaeus in the eighteenth century • system is known as binomial nomenclature

  9. Binomial Nomenclature • each organism is given a two-part name: • first part is the genus name • second part is the species name • format of the two-part scientific name: • capitalize the genus name • DO NOT capitalize the species name • BOTH names must be italicized (when typed) or underlined (when printed)

  10. Questions for Discussion • A group of individuals that interbreeds and passes on characteristics is called a(n) _____________. 2. A species is sometimes referred to as a natural unit of classification. Why do you suppose it is called a natural unit of classification? Defend your answer. Species

  11. Questions for Discussion 3. If two organisms are in the same family, what are the other levels of organization that they have in common? Genus and Species

  12. Questions for Discussion 4. The scientific name for a daffodil is: Plantae Anthophyta Monocotyledonae Liliales Amarlideceae Narcissus pseudonarcissus (a) What is the scientific binomial name for the daffodil? (b) What is the family name of the daffodil? (c) What is the phylum?
