  1. Brief Status Report All Hands Meeting Web-based Low Impact Development Decision Support and Planning Tools Bernie Engel Larry Theller , Youn Shik Park Purdue University Corps of Engineers 516(e) Program. May 31, 2012

  2. Current Projects:7 minute review: • Load Duration Curve Tool – • Upgrades with LOADEST, WQX and STEPL • L-THIA Online Model • upgrades with IWR Digital Watershed and HIT • -L-THIA LID Training with COE • -NAPRA and Biofuels applications Purdue University is an Equal Opportunity/Equal Access institution.

  3. All Hands Meeting: Response (possible) • -LID models (add new and optimized BMPs ) • - LIDAR-based conservation modeling (Indiana data coming) • -Add local resolution NHD into models • tiles, stormwater, high-res streams • -driftwatch technology • user-generated GIS in spatial database Purdue University is an Equal Opportunity/Equal Access institution.

  4. Load Duration Curve Improvements Purdue University is an Equal Opportunity/Equal Access institution.

  5. STEPL WEB (Current Work) • Replace Excel-VBS tool with web tool • Long-term daily precipitation data by CLIGEN model • Improved accessibility • Improved data handling with server-based datasets.

  6. EPA STEPL (introduction) Spreadsheet Tool for the Estimation of Pollutant Load (STEPL) is used- to compute surface runoff, sediment load, and nutrient loads (N,P,BOD),- to estimate various BMP effects.* The benefits of the model provides- a user-friendly VB interface and Microsoft Excel, - ease to prepare inputs through STEPL On-Line Data Access System (http://it.tetratech-ffx.com/steplweb/steplweb.html). *Tetra Tech, Inc. 2011. User’s Guide Spreadsheet tool for the estimation of pollutant load (STEPL) version 4.1. Tetra Tech, Inc. 10306 Eaton Place, Suite 340 Fairfax, VA 22003.

  7. EPA STEPL (Limitation) An error in the implementation of the CN runoff equation has been identified in STEPL. (Default initial abstraction is 0.0.) A certain watershed may have no annual runoff, if user changes the initial abstraction into 0.2. (e.g. Imperial county in CA) SCS-CN method is not appropriate for average rainfall per event.

  8. EPA STEPL WEB (Future Work) • Annual Groundwater estimation with reasonable scientific evidence • Capability to handle watershed information file from STEPL On-Line Data Access System • Cooperation with Web-based LDC Tool

  9. Web-based LDC Tool (Updated) • USGS LOADEST model implemented • The tool sends an e-mail to user when LOADEST running is finished. • Interface improvements and additional options added. • (i.e. selectable-plot of surface flow and growing season with user-defined values) • EPA STORET data can be derived via map.

  10. LDC connection to STORET / WQX Purdue University is an Equal Opportunity/Equal Access institution.

  11. Web-based LDC Tool (Added: STORET) STORET Station Selection Main Window Deriving Selected Data

  12. Example Load Duration Curve output Purdue University is an Equal Opportunity/Equal Access institution.

  13. L-THIA Watershed Delineation Online Model Improvements Now Covers Region 5 States and Great Lakes. Supports multi-resolution data sets. Interface allows user to control CN and EMC (the main assumptions.) New NLCD 2006 landuse data behind the model. Purdue University is an Equal Opportunity/Equal Access institution.

  14. Purdue University is an Equal Opportunity/Equal Access institution.

  15. Purdue University is an Equal Opportunity/Equal Access institution.

  16. Purdue University is an Equal Opportunity/Equal Access institution.

  17. Curve numbers and Event Mean Concentration values are now user-editable Purdue University is an Equal Opportunity/Equal Access institution.

  18. Purdue University is an Equal Opportunity/Equal Access institution.

  19. Purdue University is an Equal Opportunity/Equal Access institution.

  20. L-THIA LID Improvements: Hands on training. Purdue University is an Equal Opportunity/Equal Access institution.

  21. Hands-on Training for COE staff Purdue University is an Equal Opportunity/Equal Access institution.

  22. The training session includes 3 tutorials based on local conditions. The tutorials are documents with step-by-step instructions and will include video instructions as well. Purdue University is an Equal Opportunity/Equal Access institution.

  23. NAPRA Improvements Purdue University is an Equal Opportunity/Equal Access institution.

  24. NAPRA, using GLEAMS to calculate nutrient and pesticide loss. Improvements will incorporate removal of biomass for fuel feedstocks. Purdue University is an Equal Opportunity/Equal Access institution.

  25. NAPRA uses GLEAMS and specific management styles to calculate nutrient and pesticide loss through rootzone. Purdue University is an Equal Opportunity/Equal Access institution.

  26. J. Bagdon, 1999 Purdue University is an Equal Opportunity/Equal Access institution.
