  1. Alaska Icing Cory Wolff Icing Tools Workshop 19 – 21 November 2013

  2. IPA Status • Model data • Have been running on NOAA GSD feed; will do development on NCEP feed • Requires some new code, which is being tested • Forecast • Running in real-time on our operational machine • Keep a stable version for dissemination • Development version on another computer • Diagnosis • Satellite, METAR, and PIREP processing being done and examined • Much work to do on these

  3. IPA Tasks • AAWU Training: November 5 - 7 • Presented to 60% of the forecasters • Concerns and comments • Overforecasting is biggest problem • Will work with them on improvements • Ceiling forecast improvements, output thresholds to reduce the amount of data to peruse, analogs, fronts and winds • Icing studies: PIREP distributions, aircraft types

  4. IPA Schedule • Forecast • Winter 2013 – 2014 • Development and Testing • CWSU and AAWU will solicit PIREPs • April 2014: Development and Testing Complete • May 2014: Code Freeze • July 2014: Deliver Reruns to QA • Dates TBD: ~ 6 months • 15 December 2014: IPA Forecast on Exp. ADDS • March 2015: SRA • June 2015: TRP • January 2016: IPA Forecast on Operational ADDS • Diagnosis • Follow IPA Forecast by a year • Experimental ADDS: December 2015? • Questions • TRP required for Experimental status? • Where will the algorithms run?

  5. HRRR-Alaska Evaluation • Model SLW Comparison • Icing Product Distribution • Statistics

  6. Polar Orbiting (PO) Satellites • Dan is downloading MODIS data from Terra and Aqua through GINA

  7. Polar Orbiting Availability 06 Nov 2013 07 Nov 2013 08 Nov 2013 09 Nov 2013 10 Nov 2013 Aqua Terra Both

  8. Polar Orbiting Tasks • To do: • Gather statistics on timing and coverage • Overpass predictor • Calculate derived fields (SW-LW, Angles, SW Ref, Norm. Albedo, Icing Product) if possible • Look into other satellite sources • AAWU says they average ~1 overpass per hour from all sources • POP extended to the end of December • PO feasibility report

  9. Plans • Rest of FY13 • Continue work on IPA and PO • Deliverables • IPA diagnostic technical document (December) • IPA progress report (March) • FY14 • Deliver IPA V1.0 • Provide verification dataset • Work with ADDS team to get product displayed • Continue development of the IPA diagnosis algorithm • Regular datasets, PO data, coordinate w/ TAIWIN and MICRO
