GMOs. In plants, they are often referred to as GMOs. GMO: Genetically modified organism an organism whose genetic material has been altered using genetic engineering techniques DNA from bacteria, viruses or other plants and animals are inserted into the genomes of another animal.

  2. In plants, they are often referred to as GMOs • GMO:Genetically modified organism • an organism whose genetic material has been altered using genetic engineering techniques • DNA from bacteria, viruses or other plants and animalsare inserted into the genomes of another animal.

  3. GMOs continued • There is a lot of debate about GMOs. • Multiple times, false reports have been published causing the pubic to panic and vote to stop production of certain products • FlavrSavr Tomatoes!

GMOs continued • Pros: • These modified foods allow more people all over the world to receive the proper nutrients • GMOs can be altered to produce more of certain vitamins that people may be deficient in • Less Pesticides • GMOs can be bred to be resistant to insects that would normally destroy crops • Longer Shelf life • GMOs can last longer without going bad on the shelf • The amount of food that is wasted is also reduced • GMOs are considered to be “prettier” than organics by some people

GMOs • Cons • Some GMOs need more nutrients from the soil than traditional foods • This means that land used for GMOs cannot be used as often for crops • Unknown affects on human health • Since GMOs are so new, we do not know long-term problems that they may cause to our health • There have been studies on the negative affects to butterflys • Unlabeled products • Many people distrust GMOs. There is no official labeling system for what is a GMO and what is not so consumers do not feel safe buying foods. • Up to 80% of our food

Cons continued… • Some GMOs cannot produce offspring • Every growing season, scientists must produce new seeds to grow • Many people find this unnatural (suicidal soybeans?) • What if something happens to major facilities where seeds are produced? • Monoculture  • Monoculture means only growing one type of plant • Most animals cannot survive off of only one food • If there is disease, all of the crops are closely related so everything may die • Taste? Some people claim altered food does not taste as good as organic

  7. Hybrids? • Some fruit and vegetables naturally hybridize in nature • Example: grapefruits are thought to naturally occur from pomelo and oranges • If it happens in nature, why is it not alright to do this in a laboratory setting?
