GMOs

Advantages

  • If properly regulated

  • Remove/prevent disease in some foods

  • Food can be designed to last longer on the shelf; less waste

  • Convenience

  • Improve the nutritional value of some foods

Disadvantages

  • Doesn’t actually increase yields (over time, destroys fields)

  • Encourage the use of herbicides and pesticides (round-up ready seeds)

  • Contracts between farmers and Monsanto don’t allow crop circulation or to keep seeds; seeds are engineered to not produce more seeds

  • Bad effects on the body (carcinogens=cancer-causing agent, birth defects)

  • Engineered genes can be passed to other organisms (superweeds)

  • Organic farms near farms that use GMOs - genes transferred to their crops

Gmos

A species of malaria-carrying mosquito lives in a forest in which two species of monkeys, A and B, coexist. Species A is resistant to malaria, but species B is not. The malaria-carrying mosquito is the chief food for a particular kind of bird in the forest. If all these birds were suddenly eliminated by hunters, which of the following would be an immediately observable consequence? (HINT: Draw out a diagram and Consider how the elimination of the mosquito-eating bird would affect the mosquito population.)

  • Increased mortality (death rate) in monkey species A

  • Increased mortality in monkey species B

  • Increased mortality in the malaria-carrying mosquitoes

  • Emergence of malaria-resistant strains in monkey species B

  • Emergence of malaria-sensitive strains in monkey species A

  • Solution on next slide
