  2. INSTITUTE OF SYSTEMS ENGINEERING AND ROBOTICS The INSTITUTE OF SYSTEMS ENGINEERING AND ROBOTICS (ISER) is one of the engineering institutes of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (BAS). On 1st July 2010 the General Assembly of BAS decided that the Central Laboratory of Mechatronics and Instrumentation (CLMI) and the Institute of Control and System Research (ICSR) shall merge to form a new institute, called: “Institute of Systems Engineering and Robotics (ISER-BAS)”. ADDRESS: Acad. G. Bontchev Str. Bl. 2 1113 Sofia/ Bulgaria http://www.iser.bas.bg RECFA meeting - Sofia 24. 03. 2017 Presentation of ISER-BAS

  3. INSTITUTE OF SYSTEM ENGINEERING AND ROBOTICS - BAS • The ISER-BAS was founded on the basis of strict compliance with the recommendations of the European audit of BAS for merging the achievements of two highly evaluated BAS divisions: • the Institute of Control and System Research (ICSR) • the Central Laboratory for Mechatronics and Instrumentation (CLMI) • ISER has the potential to “strengthen its position as international (European) player and national leader” (from the Report of the International Evaluation Panel of BAS) in the areas of: • Specialized sensors, actuators and sensor systems based on novel principles • Mechatronics • Robotics • Energy systems and devices • Bioprocess control • System research for security, antiterrorism, defense and ecology. RECFA meeting - Sofia 24. 03. 2017 Presentation of ISER-BAS

  4. INSTITUTE OF SYSTEM ENGINEERING AND ROBOTICS - BAS • ISER-BAS is a unique research centre of innovative systems engineering and robotics in Bulgaria. • ISER-BAS is a fast developing institute and has strong and recognized achievements in research, innovations, patents and publications in high level journals. • ISER-BAS researchers have significant results in EC FP7 priority fields as micro-and nano technologies, sensors, bio technologies and participation in an FP7 project in service robotics. RECFA meeting - Sofia 24. 03. 2017 Presentation of ISER-BAS

  5. Mission ofTHEINSTITUTE OF SYSTEM ENGINEERING AND ROBOTICS - BAS • The mission of ISER-BAS is the realization and development of interdisciplinary research in the areas of: • New designs of sensors and micro systems for no electrical quantities like magnetic field, temperature, pressure, radiation, etc. • Design of original systems for production of bio-fuel from renewable sources, alternative energy technologies • Service robots, unique devices, components and systems, mechatronics technology and telemetric systems. • Novel serial, parallel and hybrid manipulation systems have been synthesized. • Analyses of the kinematics, workspace, singularity and motion planning of robotic systems, behaviour and control of complex systems (mechatronics, energy and fluid systems) are significant research themes. RECFA meeting - Sofia 24. 03. 2017 Presentation of ISER-BAS

  6. Staff and Education • ISER–BAS is employing 100 people amongst them: • 1 Academician of BAS • 22 Professors and Assoc. Professors • 25 Research Fellows • 32 Engineers and Specialists, among them 31 Doctors • The ISER-BAS staff members have a long-term experience in provision of expertise, consultations and specialized investigations for governmental agencies, national security and defense. • ISER-BAS has a second mission as an education center for PhD students inBulgariainthefields of innovative solutions in system engineering and robotics. • 10 PhD students • ISER-BASstaff is lecturing in System Engineering, Mechatronics and Robotics at different Technical Universities in Bulgaria. RECFA meeting - Sofia 24. 03. 2017 Presentation of ISER-BAS

  7. International Collaborations • 1987 – 2000: CERN, participation in the LEP L3 Experiment • 1998 – CERN - CMS collaborator working with ETH Zurich • Since 2007 – associate institute in the CMS collaboration • 29 years - active collaboration with the Institute of Particle Physics of ETH Zurich on engineering and technical aspects of High Energy Physics Experiments at CERN. • Since 1988: Collaboration with the Institute of Manipulators and Robots of the Technical University, Vienna (Austria). • Since 2010: Member of CIRS-International Center for Scientific Research. • Collaboration with international organizations like EUROSENSORS, NATO, UNESCO, FP of EU and others. RECFA meeting - Sofia 24. 03. 2017 Presentation of ISER-BAS

  8. ISER-BAS contributions to the L3DetectoratLEP, CERN Hadron Calorimeter • Electronic integration of all 144 modules • Design and production of HV system, including control and monitoring system TEC (Time Expansion Chamber) • Participation in construction • Mechatronics of Central Tracking cabling Data taking Maintenance of the L3 detector All activities were carried out in the framework of a collaboration agreement with the Laboratory for High Energy Physics of ETH Zurich RECFA meeting - Sofia 24. 03. 2017 Presentation of ISER-BAS

  9. ISER-BAS contributions to the construction of the CMS Detector at LHC, CERN Since 1998 participation in the construction of the CMS detector • Electronics Integration of the CMS Electromagnetic Calorimeter(W. Lustermann) • Bonding of TEC modules for the Silicon Strip Detector (W. Lustermann, K. Freudenreich) • Participation with CAD experts in the Engineering and Integration Center of CMS(G. Faber, A. Ball) • Work on the CMS Equipment Management Database(G. Faber, A. Ball) RECFA meeting - Sofia 24. 03. 2017 Presentation of ISER-BAS

  10. Participation in the Electronics Integration of the CMS Electromagnetic Calorimeter • Preparation of the infrastructure and of the integration stands in the ECAL integration center. • Construction of an ECAL Single Trigger Tower test stand. • During 2006 and 2007 participation in the ECAL barrel electronics integration and commissioning effort. • ECAL Cable production. • Coordination: W.
