  3. What does my e-portfolio do? • Summary –posts,reviews, progression(ARCP) • WPBAs - evidence • Log entries - evidence • PDP- evidence • Review preparation • Contact/important info- Educators notes, sick leave

  4. What evidence do I need? • Reflective log entries about the cases I’ve seen • Educationally important events • 2 log entries per week, linked to the competences/curriculum • WPBA – COTS/CBDS/mini-CEX/MSF/PSQ • Appropriate DOPS. Who should assess your DOPS? • CSR • A SMART PDP

  7. Why is the ESR important? • An Educational Supervisors Review (ESR) is conducted every six calendar months for all GP trainees, as prescribed by the Gold Guide. The ESR format draws together information from many sources in order to provide regular, formative feedback to the trainee, and to inform the decision making of the ARCP panel

Reflective log entries Vs • Be general and specific • Write in a natural way and describe your feelings • Reflect on what went well/not so well • How can I improve • Learning need generated ? for my PDP • Writing a log entry stating you have attended a course doesn’t count, writing what you have learnt and whether or not your learning has changed your practice does count • Quality not quantity

What constitutes reflective practice? • Internal conversation • How you feel about the situation • Write about your reaction to the situation • Use feeling words • Openness • You are willing to highlight areas of your performance that fall short of what might be expected • Learning • Show what you need to learn & be specific about how you are going to achieve this

A few more words on log entries A record of OOH – how many hours per month Professional conversations Audit SEAs Target what you need to check the box for curriculum and try and think about the cases/events in different perspectives Validating – clicking on the curriculum statements, your CS and ES endorse competences

  12. Validating Log Entries • Trainee/registrar validates against ‘curriculum statement headings’ Max 3. You need to cover the whole curriculum • ES/CS read and validates your log entries against ‘professional competences’ Max 3 • You need to encourage hospital CS to read and validate your log entries

This competence is about communication with patients, and the use of recognised consultation techniques. • Practising holistically: the ability of the doctor to operate in physical, psychological, socioeconomic and cultural dimensions, taking into account feelings as well as thoughts. • Data gathering and interpretation: the gathering and use of data for clinical judgement, the choice of physical examination and investigations, and their interpretation. • Making a diagnosis / making decisions. This competence is about a conscious, structured approach to decision making. • Clinical management: the recognition and management of common medical conditions in primary care. • Managing medical complexity and promoting health: aspects of care beyond managing straightforward problems, including the management of co-morbidity, uncertainty, risk and the approach to health rather than just illness. • Primary care administration and IMT: the appropriate use of primary care administration systems, effective recordkeeping and information technology for the benefit of patient care. • Working with colleagues and in teams: working effectively with other professionals to ensure patient care, including the sharing of information with colleagues. • Community orientation: the management of the health and social care of the practice population and local community. • Maintaining performance, learning and teaching: maintaining the performance and effective continuing professional development of oneself and others. • Maintaining an ethical approach to practice: practising ethically with integrity and a respect for diversity. • Fitness to Practice: the doctor’s awareness of when his/her own performance, conduct or health, or that of others, might put patients at risk and the action taken to protect patients • Fitness to practice: the doctor's awareness of when his/her own performance, conduct or health, or that of others, might put patients at risk and the action taken to protect patients
