  1. TOOLS FROM THE SHEDD

  2. The ResurrectionofJesus Christ Proof Beyond Reasonable Doubt

  3. What’s something we all have in common? Why Do We Care? What is the one problem all religions try to address?

  4. What Are Some Implications? If Jesus did raise from the dead thenHis words are of interest to me. Jesus made some bold claims, statements, and promises!I need to know what they are.

  5. What Claims Did Jesus Make? … to be the Way, the Truth, & the Life … to be God in the flesh … to be Savior of the world … fulfilled O.T. Scriptures/Prophecy … only spoke God’s words … promises to fix our death problem

  6. We must consider that the “unbelievable” claims He made are true! If He rose from the dead: His words would have more substance than any other “good teacher” with a philosophy about life. He has knowledge that no one else has and the solution that we all need.

  7. What Kind of Proof? Three Steps Without Appealing To The Bible Reasonable Doubt Bodily Resurrection

  8. BEYOND A REASONABLE DOUBT No other logical explanation can be derived from the facts except that the defendant committed the crime.

  9. Three Step Proof Jesus was a historical figurewho died on a Roman cross. The Body of Jesus was neverproduced or the tomb was emptyon resurrection morning. What happened to the body?(3 possibilities)

  10. First Step Jesus was a historical figurewho died on a Roman cross

  11. 1st - Define Historical: READ Luke 2:1-6, 3:1-2 Something that can beVerified or Checked.

  12. Corroborating Evidence Jewish & Non-Jewish Sources Not biblical or friendly to Christianity Why choose these sources? There are many other sources including contemporary historiansyou can find in your local library Handout excerpts from various sources

  13. Corroborating Evidence = Support of other testimony; affirmation of the essential elements of an eyewitness account The Term Corroborate Implies Other Testimony (ie. gospels) We believe these sources to be reliable but some do not.

  14. Corroborating Evidence Jewish & Non-Jewish Sources Cornelius Tacitus (Annals of Tacitus) Josephus (Inpite of tampering) Thallus & Julius Africanus Pliny the Younger Tertullian & Phlegon (Darkness) Much History of Paul & Peter Talmud & Mishna

  15. Josephus (Antiquities) “He (Ananias) convened a meeting of the Sanhedrin and brought before them a man named James, the brother of Jesus, who was called the Christ, and certain others. He accused them of having transgressed the law and delivered them up to be stoned.” Interpolations or Additions?

  16. Josephus (Testimonium Flavianum) “About this time there lived Jesus, a wise man,if indeed one ought to call him a man.For he was one who wrought surprising feats and was a teacher of such people as accept the truth gladly. He won over many Jews and many of the Greeks. He was the Christ.

  17. Josephus (Testimonium Flavianum) “When Pilate, upon hearing him accused by men of the highest standing among us, had condemned him to be crucified, those who had in the first place come to love him did not give up their affection for him. On the third day he appeared to them restored to life, for the prophets of God had prophesied these and countless other marvelous things about him. And the tribe of Christians, so called after him, has still to this day not disappeared.”

  18. Rabbis’ Writings in Mishna & Talmud “Jesus of Nazereth was a transgressor in Israel, who practised magic, scorned the words of the wise, led the people astray, and said he had not come to destroy the law but to add to it. He was hanged on Passover Eve for heresy and misleading the people.”

  19. Julius Africanus On Thallus’ Writings “Thallus, in the third book of his histories, explains away this darkness (the darkness that came at the crucifixion of Christ) as an eclipse of the sun – unreasonably, as it seem sto me (unreasonable of course, because a solar eclipse could not take place at the time of the full moon, and it was at the season of the Paschal full moon that Christ died.”

  20. Cornelius Tacitus (Annals of Tacitus) “Therefore to scotch the rumour, Nero substituted as culprits, and punished with the utmost refinements of cruelty, a class of men, loathed for their vices, whom the crowd styled Christians. Christus, from whom they got their name, had been executed by sentence of the procurator Pontius Pilate when Tiberius was emperor;

  21. Cornelius Tacitus (Annals of Tacitus) …“and the pernicious superstition was checked for a short time, only to break out afresh, not only in Judea, the home of the plague, but in Rome itself, where al the horrible and shameful things in the world collect and find a home.”

  22. What Do We Know About The Historical Jesus Without The Bible? Jesus was a Jewish teacher Many believed He did exorcisms and healed people Many believed He was Messiah/God He was rejected by many He was crucified under Pontius Pilate Many believed He rose from the dead

  23. They [The Jews] declared:“We have put to death the Messiah ‘Isa son of Mary, the apostle of Allah.” They did not kill him, nor did they crucify him, but they thought they did. Those that disagreed about him were in doubt concerning his death, for what they knew about it was sheer conjecture, they were not sure that they had slain him. Allah lifted him up to His presence; He is mighty and wise.-Sura Nisa 4:157 (N.J. Dawoodtranslation of the Koran)

  24. Swoon (verb) 1. to faint; lose consciousness. 2. to enter a state ofhysterical rapture or ecstasy

  25. Chapter 11 page 191 “The Medical Evidence” Lee Strobel: “Is there any possible way – any possible way – that Jesus could have survived this?” Alexander Metherell, M.D., Ph.D. – “Absolutely not…”

  26. Chapter 11 page 191 “The Medical Evidence” Alexander Metherell, M.D., Ph.D. – “…Remember that He was already in hypovolemic shock from the massive blood loss even before the crucifixion started. He couldn’t possibly have faked His death, because you can’t fake the inability to breathe for long. Besides, the spear thrust into His heart would have settled the issue once and for all. And the Romans weren’t about to risk their own death by allowing Him to walk away alive.”

  27. Chapter 11 page 191 “The Medical Evidence” Lee Strobel – “So when someone suggests to you that Jesus merely swooned on the cross…” Alexander Metherell, M.D., Ph.D. – “I tell them it’s impossible. It’s a fanciful theory without any possible basis of fact.”

  28. No matter whatyou think happenedto the body, Jesus was a historical figurewho died on a Roman cross First Step Conclusion:

  29. Second Step The Body of JesusWas Never Produced /Empty Tomb!

  30. Christianity is based ona historical event & we are here! Define Christian Gospel:1 Corinthians 15 (Not part of proof) Historians & Skeptics AgreeThe Body Was Never Produced …Why?

  31. 1 Corinthians 15:1-8 & 12-19 I want to remind you of the gospelI preached to you, which you received and on which you have taken your stand. By this gospel you are saved, if you hold firmly to the word I preached to you. Otherwise, you have believed in vain. For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance:

  32. Continued … … that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, and that he appearedto Peter, and then to the Twelve. After that, he appeared to more than five hundred of the brothersat the same time

  33. But if it is preached that Christhas been raised from the dead, how can some of you say that thereis no resurrection of the dead?If there is no resurrection of the dead, then not even Christ has been raised. And if Christ has not been raised, our preaching is useless andso is your faith. Continued …

  34. OBJECTIVEvs SUBJECTIVE TRUTH:

  35. Which Is Better? Capitalism or Communism? Private, Public, or Home School? Democrat or Republican? McDonalds or Burger King? Walmart or Target? Examples of Subjective Truths

  36. A Faith? 1 Corinthians 15:14-20 NO Resurrection = NO Christianity Christianity is unique amongreligions in that it is basedon a historical event, an objective truth, and not on a philosophy, which is a subjective truth!

  37. Historians & Skeptics AgreeThe Body Was Never Produced … Why? Christianity still exists &is propagated by beliefin an empty tomb!

  38. What Do They Not Agree On? What happened to the bodyis debated! Many assert Christians to be naïve or stupid in believing in the resurrection, but all must conclude the body was missing!

  39. Third Step What HappenedTo the Body? Three Possibilities:

  40. 1st:What About Enemies? Romans And JewsBoth Wanted Christianity to End Romans:“No one above Caesar” Jews: “No one can claim to be God/Messiah” (blasphemy) All they had to do was produce the body & Christianity would have died!

  41. The Gospel would be a lie Martyrs/Kamikazi Pilots To prevent their death all they hadto do was produce the body No one knowingly dies for a lie! 2nd: What About Friends?

  42. Jesus Must HaveRisen FromThe Dead! 3rd:

  43. Get to know Jesusby reading the Bible &go tell someone aboutthe Man that rosefrom the dead &offers Eternal Life to us!
