  2. A6 Identifying Liquids • Today’s Target: To learn how to properly write up a lab report and prepare for an activity. • Safety Project – Worth a quiz grade • Introduce A6 • Reading the activity • Write up A6 according to a specific format • Lab responsibilities

Safety Project • Safety Project • (quiz grade) due Wednesday • Choose one of the following formats to complete this project: • Poem (minimum of 15 lines) • Essay (minimum of 2 paragraphs) • Mini Poster (8 x 10 piece of computer paper) • Story (minimum of 2 paragraphs) • PowerPoint or DVD of a safety situation. • Be sure to include the following information in your project regardless of the format you choose: • The safety statement (copied from your safety contract) • An appropriate scenario or situation when the safety precaution applies. • What to do in order to follow the safety precaution. • What might happen if the safety precaution is not followed.

A6 Identifying Liquids – Reading for understanding. • Read the Title and Background. • Read the Challenge and think about how it relates to the background, and what we have previously done in class. • Read the steps in proper order. • Read each step carefully – DON’T SKIM THE TEXT! • As you read each step, imagine yourself completing it. • Write the number of steps you don’t understand and some questions you have about each step.

  10. A6 Identifying Liquids • Today’s Target: To identify the two (2) liquids from an unknown mixture. • Introduce A6 • Review lab safety • Gather data • Clean up

A6 Identifying Liquids • Read background on page A-21 • Draw the data table on page A-24 • Lab safety – Goggles and aprons; wash your hands • Clean your tray before using it. • Work in groups of 2 • One group tests liquid A • The other group tests liquid B • Carry out each of the tests on your liquids (See page A-23). • Use the dropper to get ONLY the liquid you are testing. • Complete the data table on page A-24.

A6 Identifying Liquids • Clean up • All liquids from the vials goes in the waste container and the front of the room. • Wash and dry all equipment using soap and water. • Wash and dry the station using soap and water. • Place fresh paper towels on the tray. • Arrange all the equipment neatly. • MAKE SURE THE CAPS ARE ON THE LIQUIDS AND THE CORRECT DROPPERS ARE ON TOP. • Wash your hands.

  21. *** The only way you can get a 4 (95%) is to get all 3’s on the top portion. If you have a 2 or a 1 then you are unable to do the bottom half . • For right now, to make a 4 you will only need 1 yes in the second box. Later on in the year you will be asked to have 2, 3, or 4.

  22. Bonus: • Anyone and everyone is capable of getting the bonus. There is not a minimum or maximum requirement. • To get a 100%- you must have all 3’s on top, at least 1 yes on the bottom, and a good opening and closimg. • The highest one can make is a 105% (All 3’s on top, at least 1 yes on the bottom, a good opening and closing, and type your answer)

  28. A6 Separating Liquids - Vocabulary • Toxic -A4 • 1. Chemical property: A specific result of a test with a chemical reagent. Chemical properties include pH, the production of a salt when an acid reacts with a metal, or a unique color change in a chemical reaction. • 2. Miscible: Two or more substances that can be mixed together in any ratio to form a single phase without separation. • 3. Physical property: A characteristic of a substance or material, such as color, density, flexibility, hardness. These properties help identify pure substances and never change whether there is a large sample or very small sample of material. They are intrinsic properties.

A6 Separating Liquids • Key Concepts: Write these down and give an example from the previous activities where this is shown. • Substances have characteristic properties such as density, that are independent of the amount of the sample. • Ex. No matter how much or how little we have, Liquid B will always float on top of Liquid A. • Scientists use appropriate tools and techniques to gather, analyze, and interpret data. • Ex. pH paper is used to tell if something is corrosive. • Scientific explanations emphasize evidence. • Ex. We are determining what liquid A and B are based on their characteristics, NOT by guessing.
