Summary Osmotic energy is the process of moving water molecules which pass through a semi- permeable membrane and when it passes, it increases the volume of the other side which in turn, increases the pressure which creates energy. In 1973, Professeur Sidney Loeb invented the semi-permeable membrane. A membrane is a film which allows water molecules to pass through. This energy can be used to drive a turbine which creates electrical energy. The membranes can be transferred to different places around the world and is being used in the Netherlands and Norway.

  3. How It Works How osmotic energy works is a 4 step process. 1. The water goes into 2 sides: The saltwater side and the fresh water side. 2. The freshwater molecules go through a semi-permeable membrane to the saltwater side. 3. It increases the volume on the saltwater side which also increases the pressure that creates energy. 4. This energy can drive a turbine which creates electrical energy that can power our homes and other electrical objects.

Advantages of Osmotic Energy • Some advantages of Osmotic energy are: • Osmotic energy is clean • It has a minimal environmental impact • It is a renewable energy source • It doesn't produce carbon dioxide • This energy is very reliable • Fact: If you have an osmotic energy power plant the size of a football field, you can generate enough energy to power 30,000 houses.

Disadvantages of Osmotic Energy • Some disadvantages of Osmotic energy are: • It is expensive (buying all the membranes exporting them etc.) • It may harm the marine environment • There may be engineering and design problems (designing the filters) • The Osmotic power plants is very hard to install and it’s expensive
