  1. Osmotic Solutions

  2. Equalconcentrationof solute Higherconcentrationof solute Lowerconcentrationof solute H2O Solutemolecule Selectivelypermeablemembrane Watermolecule Solute molecule with cluster of water molecules Net flow of water Osmosis • Diffusion of water across a membrane • Solution – water + solute • Salt water = water + NaCl

  3. Osmotic Solution • The solution that a cell is placed in. • Three types -

  4. Hypotonic Solution Higher water concentration in the solution than the cell Less dissolved substances (solute) in the solution than in the cell Water moves into the cell

  5. Hypertonic Solution Lower water concentration in the solution More dissolved substances in the cell Water moves out of cell

  6. Isotonic Solution The cell and the surrounding solution are in equilibrium. Equal concentration of dissolved substances in cell and solution. Water molecules move in and out at the same rate.

  7. Osmotic Solutions

  8. Animal Cells • Red blood cells – 80% water • Placed in 100% water – hypotonic solution • will swell and eventually burst • Cell is lysed • Placed in a saltwater solution of 30% salt 70% water – hypertonic solution • Cell will shrink • Cell is shriveled • Placed in 80% water – isotonic • Equilibrium - normal

  9. Plant Cells • Hypotonic solution – • plant cell will swell but not burst • Turgid • Hypertonic solution – • Plant cell shrivels – pulls away from cell wall • Plasmolysis • Isotonic solution – • Equilibrium • Flaccid
