  1. Trash Students will make predictions about the novel using examples from the novel.

  2. Prediction An educated guess about a future event. A hunch that we develop when reading about how the narrative may unfold Guess, projection, foretelling, prophecy, future

  3. Chapter 1 • We have just finished reading Chapter 1 • ‘Then one day I did’ pg 5 • I know that something is going to happen to Raphael because he has previously mentioned in the chapter that ‘Then one day I did.’ meaning that he has found something interesting and that will be the centre of the story. • ‘Gardo’s my partner, and we always look together. He looks after me’ pg. 6 • Based on this line at the end of chapter 1 I predict that anything that is going to happen to Raphael in the novel Gardo will be involved. It gives me the impression that these two characters are never separated.

  4. Revision… • What are the names of the characters that we have been introduced to so far? • What do they do for a living? • What is the discovery that is made at the end of chapter 2? Describe what is found. • What other important facts have we discovered in our reading so far?

  5. Chapter 2 • Make a prediction about the following • ‘People say he’s too serious, a boy without a smile’ pg. 8 • ‘an ID card. A little battered and creased, but you can make him out easy enough.’ Pg. 9

  6. Setting The place and time in which a novel, film or play is set. It provides information about the living conditions of characters. Environment, habitat, houses, streets, country, city, country, location

  7. Setting • Why is learning about setting important when reading? • How does it help us understand the novel better?

  8. Setting in Trash • Make a list of all the information we are given about the setting of ‘Trash’ so far • Why do we need to know this information?
