  3. VISION STATEMENT NWRI VISION WATERAID VISION A WORLD WHERE EVERYONE HAS ACCESS TO SAFE WATER AND EFFECTIVE SANITATION AND HYGIENE • THE FOREMOST INSTITUTION FOR CAPACITY DEVELOPMENT FOR SUSTAINABLE WATER RESOURCES MANAGEMENT IN NIGERIA AND INTERNATIONALLY

MISSION STATEMENT NWRI MISSION: WATERAID NIGERIA MISSION: DEDICATED EXCLUSIVELY TO THE PROVISION OF SAFE WATER, EFFECTIVE SANITATION AND HYGIENE PROMOTION THROUGH PARTNERSHIP WITH AND INFLUENCING KEY STAKEHOLDERS TO SET UP COST EFFECTIVE SUSTAINABLE PROJECTS USING APPROPRIATE APPROACHES AND PRACTICES THAT RESPOND TO THE NEEDS OF THE POOR. • INSTITUTE IS COMMITTED TO GHE PRACTICAL TRAINING OF SECTOR STAKEHOLDERS TO DEVELOP THEIR CAPACITIES AND EQUIP THEM WITH SKILLS FOR IMPLEMENTING INTEGRATED WATER RESOURCES MANAGEMENT • IN PURSUANCE OF EXCELLENCE, INSTITUTE SEEKS TO PROVIDE LEADERSHIP AND FOCUS IN THE CONDUCT OF APPLIED RESEARCH, ACQUISITION, ANALYSIS, STORAGE AND DISSEMINATION OF EATE RESOURCES DATA AND INFORMATION IN NIGERIA

WHY NWRI AND WATERAID MUST RELATE: • BOTH ORGANIZATIONS BELIEVE THAT WATER IS LIFE • BOTH ORGANIZATIONS ENVISION A SUSTAINABLE WATER RESOURCE THAT IS SAFE AND ACCESSABLE TO ALL • BOTH ORGANIZATIONS UNDERSTAND THAT APPROPRIATE APPROACHES AND GOOD PRACTICES CAN ONLY BE GENERATED THROUGH EFFECTIVE APPLIED RESEARCH AND DISSEMINATION • BOTHE ORGANIZATIONS ALSO AGREE THAT APPLICATION OF APPROPRIATE APPROACHES AND GOOD PRACTICES IS POSSIBLE ONLY IF PEOPLE’S CAPACITY AND SKILLS ARE DEVELOPED

WHAT WATERAID THINK ABOUT NWRI • NWRI SHOULD DRIVE RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT OF WATER, SANITATION & HYGIENE SECTOR • NEED TO CREATE MORE AWARENESS ABOUT THE INSTITUTE / MAKE MORE IMPACT • TECHNOLOGY DEVT. SHOULD BE PART OF MANDATE • INSTITUTIONAL MAPPING SHOULD BE PART OF MANDATE • NEED TO CREATE A UNIT FOR POLICY RESEARCH/ FORMULATION IN NWRI • INCLUDE SANITATION & HYGIENE IN MANDATE POINT (F)

WHAT WATERAID THINK ABOUT NWRI • EXPAND CURRICULUM TO COVER WIDER AREA OF SPECIALTY IN WRM • FOCUS MORE ON RESEARCH IN THE SECTOR – PLAYERS, ROLES, NEEDS & DELIVERABLES • NEED TO IMPROVE IN ITS EFFORTS TO DEVELOP AFFILIATION WITH SIMILAR RESEARCH INSTITUTES OUTSIDE THE COUNTRY • WONDERS WHETHER AN EFFECTIVE COMPUTERIZED DATA BASE/BANK EXISTS IN THE INSTITUTE

OUR SERVICE EXPECTATIONS • MORE SPECIALISED RESEARCH IN THE SECTOR • TECHNOLOGY REQUIREMENTS WITHIN SECTOR • DONORS TO ASSIST MORE IN TECHNICAL AREAS • SUPPORT WATERAID NIGERIA IN ITS WRM ROGRAM • WaterAid will be very interested to learn more from the institute in this aspect. • SUPPORT WATERAID NIGERIA IN INSTITUTIONAL CAPACITY DEVELOPMENT • INSTITUTIONAL MAPPING • TRAINING & DEVT. OF INSTITUTIONS • COLLABORATE WITH WATERAID NIGERIA IN THE INSTITUTIONALIZION OF A TRAINING PROGRAM ON COMMUNITY LED TOTAL SANITATION (CLTS)

  9. OUR SERVICE EXPECTATIONS • SHARE EXPERIENCES/LEARNING WITH OUR INSTITUTIONAL DEVT. TEAM • AVAIL WATERAID NIGERIA OF LIBRARY RESOURCES/ RELEVANT PUBLICATIONS • USE ITS STRATEGIC POSITION/POWERS TO CHAMPION ADVOCACY IN THE SECTOR, BASED ON RESEARCH FINDINGS

SUGGESTIONS ON THE WAY FORWARD • CONDUCT RESEARCHES THAT ARE AIMED AT GENERATING APPROPRIATE AND AFFORDABLE TECHNOLOGIES FOR THE POOR AND VULNERABLE • MAINTAIN AN EFFECTIVE DATABASE THAT IS CURRENT AND ACCESSIBLE TO STAKEHOLDERS IN THE SECTOR • INTRODUCE A JOURNAL FOR THE SECTOR & HAVE PLAYERS CONTRIBUTE ARTICLES FOR PUBLICATION • INVOLVE MORE ON KNOWLEDGE MGT. & DISSEMINATION

SUGGESTIONS ON THE WAY FORWARD • CREATE A LINK WITH OTHER TRAINING INSITUTIONS IN THE SECTOR • TRAIN & MAINTAIN A DATABASE OF CONSULTANTS IN WATER QUALITY, MONITORING & DEVELOPMENT • PUBLISH NEWSLETTER FOR SECTOR PLAYERS E.G. WANG & INCLUDE LIST OF COURSES OFFERD BY NWRI FOR AWARENESS & PARTICIPATION • AGGRESSIVELY SOLICIT FUND FROM THE DONOR COMMUNITY • STRENGTHING LINKAGES WITH OTHER RESEARCH INSTITUTES BOTH WITHIN AND OUTSIDE NIGERIA
