  1. THE GREAT COMMISSION IN TEN PARTS

  2. PART SIX: THE ACT (OF OBEDIENCE):BAPTISM The five accounts of the Great Commission are in: Matthew 28; Mark 16; Luke 24; John 20; Acts 1.

  3. Here is a summary of the first five points: • The authority behind it: Jesus Christ. • The obligation: Go. • The place: All the world and everyone in it. • The method: Teach. • The message: Hear, believe, repent, confess Christ, and be baptized.

  4. Let us ask and answer six questions.

  5. What is the baptism of the Great Commission? On the negative side, the baptism of the Great Commission is not: Holy Spirit baptism (John 14-16; Acts 1,2; limited to the apostles). Baptism in fire (Matthew 3:10-12; punishment).

  6. John’s baptism (Acts 19:1-12; no longer in effect). An improper “mode” (such as sprinkling or pouring).

  7. On the positive side, the baptism of the Great Commission is: Immersion (the Greek word means to submerge, plunge, dip, immerse). Immersion in water (Ephesians 5:26; Acts 8:36-39).

  8. The one baptism (Ephesians 4:5). A burial (Colossians 2:12). Very important (Mark 16:16).

  9. Who should be baptized? Baptism is for those who have been taught (Matthew 28:19; Acts 18:8). Baptism is for those who believe (Mark 16:16; Acts 18:8). Baptism is for those who are guilty of sin (John 20:23; Acts 2:38).

  10. Baptism is for those who are penitent (have repented; Luke 24:47; Acts 2:38; 3:19). Baptism is for those who confess Christ (Acts 8:37; Romans 10:9,10). Baptism is for men and women (Acts 8:12). Baptism isnot for infants – for they do not meet (nor can they meet) any of the above criteria.

  11. How should I be baptized? In water (Acts 8:36-39; Ephesians 5:26). In much water (John 3:23). I should go to the water (Acts 8:36). I should go into the water (Matthew 3:13-17; Acts 8:36-39).

  12. I should be buried in the water (Romans 6:3,4; Colossians 2:12). I should be planted there (Romans 6:5). I will be washed pure from sin (Titus 3:5; Hebrews 10:22; Acts 22:16). I should be resurrected from the water (Romans 6:4,16-18). I should come up out of the water (Matthew 3:16; Acts 8:39).

  13. Why should I be baptized? For the remission of sins. We are lost apart from obedience to God (Romans 3:23; 5:8; 6:23). Jesus died for my sins (Matthew 26:28; Luke 19:10; Matthew 11:28-30). I need His blood (Hebrews 7:27; 9:22-28; John 1:29).

  14. Baptism is where the benefits of His blood are received (Matthew 26:28; Acts 2:38; Mark 16:16; Acts 22:16; 1 Peter 3:21; Romans 6:3,4).

  15. What are the effects of baptism? Obedience to God (Acts 10:48; Revelation 22:14; Hebrews 5:8,9). It fulfills righteousness (Matthew 3:15; Acts 10:34,35; Psalm 119:172; Matthew 25:46). Our sins are washed away; we are pure (Acts 22:16; Hebrews 10:22).

  16. We are saved (Hebrews 5:8,9; 1 Peter 3:21; Mark 16:16). We are put into Christ (and His body/ church/kingdom; Romans 6:3,4; Galatians 3:27; 1 Corinthians 12:13; John 3:3-5; Colossians 1:13; Acts 2:47). We are made heirs (Romans 8:16,17; 1 Peter 1:4).

  17. When should I be baptized? When I believe what the Bible says about baptism (note the way that questioners responded; Acts 2:37; 9:6). Today (2 Corinthians 6:2; James 4:14; Acts 2:41). Immediately (Acts 9:18; 16:33).

  18. In light of the fact that baptism is mentioned so often in the New Testament, and in light of the fact that the above questions are definitely answered in the New Testament, and in light of the fact that almost no one teaches these things, the emphasis on this subject is entirely appropriate.

  19. If you have never studied this subject, or if you have never obeyed this commandment, we plead with you to take the time immediately to attend to it. Remember, it was Jesus Who made it part of the Great Commission.
