  1. Fulfilling the Great Commission Colossians 1:5-10

  2. Colossians 1:5-7 For the hope which is laid up for you in heaven, whereof ye heard before in the word of the truth of the gospel; which is come unto you, as it is in all the world; and bringeth forth fruit, as it doth also in you, since the day ye heard of it, and knew the grace of God in truth: as ye also learned of Epaphras our dear fellowservant, who is for you a faithful minister of Christ;

  3. Colossians 1:8-10 Who also declared unto us your love in the Spirit. For this cause we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to desire that ye might be filled with the knowledge of his will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding; That ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God;

  4. The Movement of the Gospel From Jerusalem to Colossae

  5. Colossians 1:5 • . . . whereof ye heard before in the word of the truth of the gospel . . . God’s Primary Plan Oral Transmission

  6. Hope • People received hope from hearing the gospel. • Notice the use of hearing in vs. 6.

  7. Ears to Hear • Frequently Jesus used the expression • “If anyone has ears to hear, let them hear.” • It is a fatal mistake to ignore the message of the gospel.

  8. Hear • Romans 10:17 • So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. Turn to Matthew 13.

  9. The Seed is the Word of God. Heard or Read (in any language; in any translation)

  10. Productivity • Notice the productivity of the gospel. • Colossians 1:6 • Which [the gospel] is come unto you, • as it is in all the world; • and bringeth forth fruit

  11. What is the Fruit? Three Major Uses of Fruit in the NT

  12. #2 Fruit is Converts • Romans 1:13 • Now I would not have you ignorant, brethren, that oftentimes I purposed to come unto you, (but was let hitherto,) that I might have some fruit among you also, even as among other Gentiles.

  13. Application • Where do you desire to go to have some fruit among them? • Where will you be going that others will not go?

  14. Iraq • UNC-P • PCC • FTCC • IHOP • Fort Jackson • USASOC _______ • Your Neighborhood • Peru/Jamaica • Terry Sanford • RDU Flight 467 • 3rd Brigade • Reynolds Residence Hall (WCU) • Afghanistan • ??? _______________

  15. Brings Forth Fruit • The terms used (Col. 1), when pressed to their original meaning, suggest • 1) reproductive capability and • 2) maturing capability. • Not only is there fruit, but the fruit ripens/grows/develops to maturity.

  16. Bearing Fruit • It is not sufficient for the branches to cling to the trunk of the tree; they must produce fruit! • John 15:2 • Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit.

  17. Bearing Fruit Glorifies God. • John 15:8 • Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so shall ye be my disciples.

  18. God’s PlanThe global conversion of souls occurs throughout the entire world by disciples of Christ sowing gospel seeds as they live. Then God brings the increase! (1 Cor. 3:6-7)

  19. How do we know they are converts? This leads us to our third use of fruit.

  20. Matthew 7:16-20 Fruit (7x)

  21. #3 Fruit is Attitude/ Behavior • Galatians 5:22-23 • But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. They had a reputation of

  22. Dual Use • John 15:8 • Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so shall ye be my disciples. Look at Colossians 1:10.

  23. At the Church • The Gospel is being preached. • Truth is being taught. • People are putting faith in Christ. • People are loving others. • Folks are growing in the Word of God. • Ultimately God is being Glorified!

  24. Colossians 1:6 • [the Gospel] is come unto you, • as [the gospel] is in all the world; • and bringeth forth fruit, • as [the Gospel] doth also in you, • since the day ye heard of [the gospel], • and knew the grace of God in truth . . .

  25. How does the gospel produce fruit in ME?

  26. How does the gospel produce fruit in ME? Consider this: When I am struggling with forgiving someone or showing grace, I think about the gospel, and it prompts me to love, to be merciful, to be patient, etc.

  27. What is the power behind the Gospel’s productivity? Paul says it is bearing fruitin all the world . . . .

  28. Asked in Another Way: Why did Christianity become a world-wide system of beliefs . . . instead of just another ancient pagan religion/cult?

  29. #1 Grace • Colossians 1:6 • Which is come unto you, as it is in all the world; and bringeth forth fruit, as it doth also in you, since the day ye heard of it, and knew the grace of God in truth . . .

  30. #1 Grace • The Grace of God • Eph 2:8-9 • For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God . . .

  31. #1 Grace • John 1:12-13 • But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.

  32. #1 Grace • Titus 2:11 • For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world . . . God’s grace saves and sanctifies.

  33. #1 Grace and Truth • Colossians 1:6 • . . . and knew the grace of God in truth . . . • John 1:17 • For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.

  34. 2. What is the power behind the Gospel’s productivity? Paul says it is bearing fruitin all the world . . .

  35. #2 Human Factor • Colossians 1:7 • As ye also learned of [from] Epaphras our dear fellowservant, who is for you a faithful minister of Christ . . .

  36. The Sower is a Human Being. God’s Plan is for God’s People to Share God’s Word.

  37. Conclusion • Colossians 1:9 • For this cause we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to desire that ye might be filled with the knowledge of his will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding . . .

  38. Conclusion • Colossians 1:10 • That ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing [to him], • being fruitful in every good work, • and increasing in the knowledge of God.
