Upon Receiving the Application Package • Read the directions thoroughly • Be sure to notice the submission deadline • Mark your calendar two weeks prior to that deadline and get it done! • No use in creating self-imposed barriers to financial assistance! • Request your letters of recommendation as soon as possible and long before the deadline.

  3. Your Submission Package • Include a cover letter • Add extra items IF NOT forbidden • Include letters of recommendation • Proof read everything • It is better if someone else can proof your work • Review your submission for neatness, consistency of formatting, spelling errors • Submit completed work in a clear plastic folder.

  4. Writing the Application Essay • Notice the deadline for submission. • Set a timetable to complete the essay. • Outline your work. • Be clear about the purpose of this essay • Brainstorm for ideas • Focus on what makes YOU different • Narrow the focus to three or four key items • Decide on a structure and outline your work

  5. Edit Your Submission • Proofread, revise and proofread again • Look for active voice in your verbs • Look for words you don’t normally use in everyday language • Link paragraphs with transition words • Run spell check • Don’t depend on it solely though! • Keep to the point and be succinct. • Ask someone else to proof it in addition to you.

  6. Submitting Your Application • On Time • Track your mailing so you know it was received on time. • Request a return receipt be delivered.
