  4. First, learning experiences should be personalized, following each student's interests and enhancing his or her strengths because today any talent, when fully developed, can be valuable. Second, learning should be product-driven, ensuring that students are engaged in creating products and services instead of simply consuming information. Finally, learning should occur in the broad context of globalization, and technology should be used to expand students' learning beyond the school to the globe. FY15 Supplemental Request: Innovation and Extended Learning in the Needham Public Schools The proposal is for additional funds to provide innovation, creativity, and extended learning to enrich each child’s education: Introduce Spanish, Technology, the Arts, and expanded Health and PE in grades 1-5 and Music in kindergarten Offer additional and enhanced programming for the high school in the Arts, Technology, and Club Sports Provide an additional 75 hours or three weeks elementary instruction; 30 hours of instruction at middle schools Ensure staff have additional time to collaborate to improve student growth, success, and achievement

FY15 Supplemental Request: Innovation and Extended Learning in the Needham Public Schools Programmatic needs identified in recent curriculum reviews: Fine & Performing Arts Program Review, November 2009: Reinstate kindergarten music instruction by music specialists Explore reallocation of resources to provide for at least one Theatre Arts course at the high school Create structures and opportunities to enable ongoing authentic arts integration throughout school programs

Expansion of Wellness and Physical Education programs, grades 1-5 Introduction of kindergarten music New Spanish program, grades 1-5 New Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) programs, grades 1-3 Up to 75 hours of new programming

New and enhanced high school staff in the arts, music, and technology; new club sports activities An additional 30 hours of instruction at the middle schools, ensuring we maintain state guidelines and are in line with our peers

All teachers will have additional meeting time to create dynamic learning experiences and collaborate to support student growth, success, and achievement. All teachers will have additional time to support the increasing demands of state mandates, including educator evaluation, and to address diverse student learning needs.

Broadmeadow, Eliot, Hillside, Mitchell start 15 minutes earlier at 8:20 a.m. and end 10 minutes later at 2:45 p.m. Newmanstarts at 8:45 a.m. and ends at 3:10 p.m. High Rock ends 10 minutes later, at 2:10 p.m. Pollard ends 10 minutes later, at 2:20 p.m.

FY15 Supplemental Request: Innovation and Extended Learning in the Needham Public Schools This important budget request outlines an opportunity for the Needham community to introduce creative elementary and high school programs, extend the instructional day at the middle schools, and provide all professionals with the time necessary to confer, collaborate, and address the aspirations of all students and the goals of the district. The plan will support educational innovation, promote 21st century skills, and empower our young people and the adults who serve them.
