  3. Cultural snapshot • One of the world’s oldest civilizations • Population of over 1.3 billion people • That’s about 1/5th of the world’s ENTIRE population! • Many different dialects • Mandarin, Cantonese, Shanghainese... • Family based culture

  4. Music- Instruments • Xaio- flute made of dark brown (“purple”) bamboo • Huquin- bowed 2 string instrument • Zheng- Plucked strings • Pluck with right hand • Bend strings with left hand

  5. Listen! • Think, Pair, Share • What type of music do you think this is? • What do you think it’s about? • What instruments do you think you hear? • Describe the voice of the singer.

  6. “Purple Bamboo” • Folk song (lullaby) • From the Beijing region of China (Manderin) • Singer: Male voice • Sliding tones, nasal tone highly prized • Xaio: embellished melody- “adding flowers”

  7. Pentatonic scale • Much of Chinese music uses the pentatonic scale • PENTA: 5 • TONIC: Note • 5 note scale

  8. Your turn! • The Pentatonic scale is the same as the black keys of the bells! • Take some time to explore the Pentatonic scale and create your own mini- black key only song!

Mongolia • Genghuis Khan • Built the largest contiguous land empire in history • Gobi desert in the south, cold mountains in the north • Music influenced by nature, nomadism and religion • Festivals • Mostly celebrations of Mongolian culture. • Naadam Festival is the largest festival, celebrated in every town and village across the country. It features three sporting events: wrestling, archery and horse racing, amongst other traditional games and exhibits. • Eagle Festival draws about 400 eagle hunters on horseback to compete with their birds

  13. Cultural Snapshot • Tuvan people • Live in southern Siberia • “Nation within a Nation” • Traditionally divided into 9 regions • Cattle-herding nomads • Closest genetic relatives to the Native Americans

  14. Listen! • What instruments do you think you hear? • Number of voices?

Tuvan throat singing: Khoomei • Usually done by male herders (women are now beginning to throat sing) in Southern Siberia. • Singers sometimes will travel many miles to find the perfect spot in which to throat sing. • The worldview of this region identifies the spirituality of objects in nature, not by physical being, but in their sound as well. • Imitating the sounds of nature is the root of throat singing.

  19. Cultural snapshot • Very diverse culture • Shaped by many different religions • Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainisam, Sikhism originated here • Christianity and Islam came later • Population over 1.2 billion • Once ruled by the UK • Non-violent resistance led by Ghandi led to independence in 1947

Music • Indian classical music has strong roots in folk • 2 styles: • Hindustani: North India • Carnatic: South India • Raga: • Scale system used in India • 5 or more notes on which a melody is built • “to color” the mind/ emotions (Sanskrit) • Specific ragas used at different times of day or different seasons • Some ragas have the same notes- but the way they are approached is different.

  23. Influence on the world • Just as other music genres began to influence Indian music (pop, rock, hiphop etc.), Indain music influenced those genres • Most popular in the 70’s • Inspired the Beatles!- Listen! • Any songs you can think of that sound like they may have Indian influences?
