  5. Federal vs States’ Rights Federal Government The States of America • We make Laws for everyone to follow (even states) ex: you have the freedom of speech • States got power not taken by Federal government ex: how schools are run, where and when voting takes place. (Ohio doesn’t have to follow KY rules unless traveling in KY) • ALSO wanted the power to ignore federal laws! (freeing slaves)

  6. Abolition Movement (anti-slavery) PEOPLE NOT PROPERTY • Uncle Tom’s Cabin written by Herriot Beecher Stowe presented in written form the South’s mistreatment of African Americans • People from free states were appalled by the mistreatment of and auctioning of people – NOT property

  7. The Cotton Gin • Invented by Eli Whitney • It separated the cotton seeds from the cotton • = more cotton produced

  8. The Cotton Gin & Slavery • As more cotton is produced it became cheaper • Low price = high demand (people demanded) • Southerners relied heavily on slavery

  9. Slave vs Non Slave States • As new states are being added to the Union a HUGE DEBATE occurred. Would they be slave state or Free state? Each side lobbied for control

  10. Compromises for peace • To keep southern states happy Henry Clay of Kentucky came up with the Compromise of 1850. Any new state admitted into the union would be free Slave states got new slave laws

  11. Slave vs Non Slave States Southern States • Wanted to protect their “right to liberty” free to have slaves “right to pursue happiness” slaves help make us money • What did Jefferson say to do if a govt takes away your rights?
