  1. QOTD • How does DNA help us in medicine?

  2. DNA Technology Mr.Dunnum

  3. Recombinant DNA technology • Refers to the set of techniques for combining genes from different sources in vitro( in a test tube) and transferring this DNA into a cell so it can be expressed.

  4. Why is DNA technology so important? • DNA technology is changing the pharmaceutical industry • DNA technology-Is widely used to produce medicines and to diagnose diseases

  5. Biotechnology • The use of living organisms to do practical tasks. • Examples: • The use of microorganisms to make cheese and wine • Selective breeding of livestock and crops • Production of antibiotics from microorganisms • Production of monoclonal antibodies

  6. Goal of Biotechnology • To find practical applications of DNA techniques for the improvement of human health and food production • Examples: • Medical uses. Diagnosis of disease • Making vaccines and other pharmaceutical products

  7. Medicines • Therapeutic hormones • In 1982, humulin, human insulin produced by bacteria • Became the first recombinant drug approved by the Food and Drug Administration

  8. Gene Therapy • Gene therapy may someday help treat a variety of diseases • Gene therapy • Is the alteration of an afflicted individual’s genes Insert normal gene into virus Infect bone marrow cell with virus Viral DNA inserts into chromosome Bone marrow cell from patient Inject cells into patient

  9. Safety and ethical issues • What do you believe?
