  1. QOTD 11/12/13 Do the Chem Catalyst question on page 121. YOU WILL NEED A CALCULATOR AND A PERIDOIC TABLE! Get a periodic table from up front if you don’t have one already! Also have your homework from Friday ready (p. 117-120)

  2. QOTD Answer • There are 9 moles of C for every 1 mole of C9H8O4 • Molar mass of C = 12.01 g / 1 mol • 9 mol C x 12.01 g = 108.09 g 1 mol C

  3. Answer Key and Today’s Assignment • Check your homework answers using the answer key. Please ask me any questions you have during work time today or tutorial. • You now have work time on pages 121-122. We will go over the answers in 25 minutes. • If you finish early, please work on the homework on page 123 (#1-5 only)

  4. Answers to pages 121-122 • STATION 1. I assumed I had 4.5 g of water but your number might be different. • Water = 2x H + 1 x O • 2 x 1.008 g/mol + 1 x 15.999 g/mol • Molar mass of water = 18.015 g/mol • 4.5 g x 1 mol H2O = 0.25 mol H2O 18.015 g

  5. Station 1 • So 0.25 moles H2O = ? molecules 1 mole = avogadro’s number = 6.02 x 1023mcls mcls is shorthand for “molecules” 0.25 mol x 6.02 x 1023mcls = 1.5 x 1023mcls 1 mol

  6. Station 2 • Piece of Al foil = _________ g • Molar mass of Al = 26.982 g/mol • ______ g Al x 1 mol Al = _______ mol Al 26.982 g Al For silicon, molar mass = 28.085 g/mol Mass of piece of Si = _____g ______ g Si x 1 mol Si = _______mol Si 28.085 g Si

  7. Station 3 • NaOH = 1 x Na + 1 x O + 1 x H • 1 x 22.99 g/mol + 1 x 15.999 g/mol + 1 x 1.008 g/mol Molar mass of NaOH = 39.988 g/mol 0.175 molNaOH x 39.988 g = 7.00 g 1 molNaOH

  8. Station 3 • Molar mass of NaCl = 58.443 g/mol • 0.30 molNaCl x 58.443 g = 17.5 g = 18 g 1 molNaCl

  9. Station 4 • Molar mass of Fe = 55.845 g/mol 0.116 mol Fe x 55.845 g = 6.478 g = 6.50 g 1 mol Fe

  10. Homework • Finish page 123 # 1 – 5 only
