VA Education Programs • Montgomery GI Bill—Active Duty (MGIB, or Chapter 30) • Initial active duty service after 6-30-85 • $1,200 military pay reduction • Montgomery GI Bill—Selected Reserve (MGIB-SR, or Chapter 1606) • 6 year Selected Reserve Obligation • Finish initial active duty training • Funded by Department of Defense (DoD)

VA Education Programs • Reserve Educational Assistance Program (REAP, or Chapter 1607) • Established in 2005 by Department of Defense (DoD) • Designed to provide education assistance to members of the Reserve components called or ordered to active duty in response to a war or national emergency • Minimum of 90 days continuous active duty • VA administers the program and pays benefit from funds contributed by DoD

VA Education Programs • Survivors’ & Dependents’ Educational Assistance (DEA, or Chapter 35) • Spouses & children of Veterans or service members who: • Died While on Active Duty, or • Permanently & Totally Disabled, or • Died From Service-Connected Disability, or are • MIA, POW, or Hostages • VA determines has a service-connected permanent and total disability; and • At the time of VA’s determination is a member of the Armed Forces who is hospitalized or receiving outpatient medical care, services, or treatment; and • Is likely to be discharged or released from service for this service connected disability

  6. VA Education Programs • Post-9/11 GI Bill (CH 33) Individuals who served on active duty after 09/10/01 for an aggregate period of at least 90 days. Note: Exceptions are made for individuals discharged due to a service connected disability and serving at least 30 continuous days on active duty after 9/10/01. 6 6

Post-9/11 GI Bill Eligibility Period • Eligible for benefits for 15 years from: • Date of last discharge; • Or Release from active duty of at least 90 continuous days. • Entitled to 36 months of benefits • Limited to 48 months of combined benefits under educational assistance programs administered by VA. NOTE: Individuals transferring to the Post-9/11 GI Bill from the Montgomery GI Bill (chapter 30) will be limited to the amount of remaining chapter 30 entitlement. 7 7

Veterans Retraining Assistance Program (VRAP) • VOW to Hire Heroes Act of 2011 begins on July 1, 2012 • Offers 12 months of training assistance to unemployed Veterans between the ages of 35 and 60 • Receive up to 12 months of assistance at the full-time rate under Montgomery GI-Bill-Active Duty ($1,473 per mo.) • Programs: • VA approved program at a community college or technical school that leads to an Associates, Non-College Degree, or Certification
