2. Cattle

3. Cattle • Bull – uncastrated male used for reproduction • Steer – castrated male used for meat production • Heifer – female that has not had offspring( baby) . (Usually less than 18-24 months of age) • Cow – female beef/dairy animal that has had a calf.

4. Calf – newborn/ young animal either male or female. • Calving – the act of parturition in cattle. • Beef- type of meat from cattle

6. Sheep • Ram – uncastrated male used for reproduction. • Wether – castrated male sheep. • Ewe – female sheep. • Lamb – young sheep, also name of meat for young sheep • Lambing – act of parturition in sheep. • Mutton- name for meat from older sheep.

8. Swine • Boar – uncastrated male used for reproduction • Barrow – castrated male used for meat. • Gilt – female swine that has not had a litter. • Sow – female swine that has had a litter. • Pig/ piglet – young swine. • Farrowing – act of parturition in swine. • Pork- name of meat from swine.

10. Horses • Stallion – uncastrated male horse. • Gelding – castrated male horse. • Mare – female horse over two years of age. • Filly – female horse less than two years of age that has not had a foal. • Colt- young male horse normally under 2 years

11. Foal – young horse. • Foaling – act of parturition in horses. • Cheval- horsemeat consumed in other countries

13. Chickens • Rooster – uncastrated male chicken. • Capon – castrated male chicken. • Hen – female chicken. • Broiler – young chicken at market weight. • Chick – very young chicken not yet at market weight. • Laying – act of parturition in chickens. • Chicken- meat from chickens.

15. Goats • Buck/Billy – uncastrated male goat. • Wether – castrated male goat. • Nanny female that has given birth. • Doe – female goat. • Kid – young goat. • Kidding – act of parturition in goats. • Goat/chevon- the meat of goats.
