  3. Truths, half truths and lies. The 9th Commandment August 12 & 26, 2012.

  4. “You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor.” Exodus 20:16. “seqer”-Hebrew word for “falsehood, deception.” “saw”-Hebrew word used in Deuteronomy text on the 9th Commandment for “swearing falsely, or for careless words without meaning.”

  5. Subsets of lying. • Deut 19:11b-Do not lie. • Deut 19:11c-Do not deceive one another. • Deut 19:16-Do not go around spreading slander among your people.

  6. Exodus 23:1-9 Key concerns:- • Lies, deception and slander. • Justice and mercy. • Corruption and oppression.

  7. Exodus 23: 1-9. v1“Do not spread false reports (saw). Do not help a wicked man by being a malicious witness.” • We can spread false reports and be a malicious witness by simply being irresponsible with our words.

  8. But now you must rid yourselves of all such things as these; anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips. Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with it’s practices and have put on your new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of the Creator. Col 3:8-10

  9. “A lie that is half truth is the darkest of all lies” Lord Alfred Tennyson

  10. Numbers 12:1-9 v1Miriam and Aaron began to talk against Moses because of his Cushite wife, for he had married a Cushite. v2 “Has the Lord spoken only through Moses?” they asked. “Hasn’t he also spoken through us?” And the Lord heard this. v3(Now Moses was a very humble man, more humble than anyone else on the face of the earth.) v9The anger of the Lord burned against them, and he left them.

  11. Be careful of what you say. • Half truths, partial truths and even sometimes the truth can be used to hurt others. • Never underestimate the damage our words can do to others.

  12. Be careful of what you say. • Half truths, partial truths and even sometimes the truth can be used to hurt others. • Never underestimate the damage our words can do to others. • Never underestimate who is capable of deception and slander.

  13. “He who knows how to flatter also knows how to slander.” Napoleon Bonaparte

  14. Matthew 22:15-17 v15Then the Pharisees went out and laid a plan to trap him with his own words.v16They sent their disciples to him along with the Herodians. “Teacher,” they said, “we know you are a man of integrity and that you teach the way of God in accordance with the truth. You aren’t swayed by men, because you pay no attention to who they are. v17Tell us then, what is your opinion? Is it right to pay taxes to Caesar or not?”

  15. Ephesians 4:14-16 v14Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of men in their deceitful scheming. v15Instead speaking the truth in love, we will in all things grow up into him who is the Head, that is, Christ.v16 From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work.

  16. Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen. Ephesians 4:29 • In any church there will be people of different sensitivities and personalities. How do we ensure we all get along as family?

  17. Exodus 23: 1-9. v2“Do not follow the crowd in doing wrong. When you give testimony in a lawsuit, do not pervert justice by siding with the crowd, and do not show favoritism to a poor man in his lawsuit. • Never underestimate the influence of others that will cloud our judgment.

  18. Do not pervert justice; do not show partiality to the poor or favoritism to the great, but judge your neighbor fairly. Lev 19:15

  19. When his master heard the story his wife told him, saying “This is how your slave treated me,” he burned with anger. Joseph’s master took him and put him in prison, the place where the king’s prisoners were confined. Genesis 39:19-20

  20. Be careful what you hear. • Don’t underestimate our willingness to believe lies and half truths.

  21. Our abilities to face the truth can be influenced by people close to us. • Emotions cloud our judgment on issues and people.

  22. v7Jezebel his wife said, “Is this how you act as King of Israel? Get up and eat! Cheer up. I’ll get you the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite.” v8So she wrote letters in Ahab’s name, placed his seal on them, and sent them to the elders and nobles who lived in Naboth’s city with him.v9 In those letters she wrote: “Proclaim a day of fasting and seat Naboth in a prominent place among the people. v10But seat two scoundrels opposite him and have them testify that he has cursed both God and King. Then take him out and stone him to death.” 1 Kings 21:7-10

  23. He has shown you, O man, what is good, And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God. Micah 6:8

  24. Be careful what you DO NOT say. • Charity includes standing up to injustices, especially to the poor and defenseless. • What is your response when the church is subject to lies and false charges?

  25. False witnesses from the Synagogue • “This fellow (Stephen) never stops speaking against this holy place and against the law. For we have heard him say that this Jesus of Nazareth will destroy this place and change the customs Moses handed down to us.” Acts 6:13-14

  26. False witnesses in Philippi • “These men are Jews, and are throwing our city into an uproar, by advocating customs unlawful for us Romans to accept or practice.” Acts 16:20-21

  27. False witnesses in Thessalonica • “These men who have caused trouble all over the world have now come here…They are all defying Caesar’s decrees, saying that there is another king, one called Jesus.” Acts 17:6-8

  28. False witnesses in Ephesus • “…the temple of the great goddess Artemis will be discredited, and the goddess herself, who is worshipped throughout the province of Asia and the world, will be robbed of her majesty.” Acts 19:27

  29. False witnesses in Jerusalem • “Men of Israel, help us! This is the man (Paul) who teaches all men everywhere against our people and our law and place. And besides, he has brought Greeks into the temple area and defiled this holy place.” Acts 21:28

  30. So let me pose the issues I think America faces today. At the individual level there is a simple choice. Will we be tribespeople and respond accordingly to our group allegiances, will we be idiots (in the Greek sense), people who are just after their own individual interest, or thirdly, will we be citizens, people who can fight for their own interest but always with a respect for the common good, recognizing the rights of the worst of their enemies and the smallest minorities that they happen to oppose. Too many Christians today are tribespeople. Would that they were citizens in the best sense of the word. (Os Guiness in Modern Reformation: God & Politics: Sept/Oct 1994 Vol 13, No. 5, pg 24-29).

  31. Painful truths. • Speak the truth in love. • Discern the truth from lies. • Stand up for the truth when called for.

  32. “History is a set of lies agreed upon.” Napoleon Bonaparte

  33. v3For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine.v4Instead to suit their own desires, they will gather around a great number of teachers to say what their itchy ears want to hear.v5They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths. 2 Tim 4:3-5
