  1. Room 18 OTS

  2. Narrative: • Thriller/ horror hybrid. • Act 1: Gabriel goes camping with his friends, one dies, they wake up in the morning and find the body. • Act 2: More and more people are killed of as the investigation seems to go no where Gabriel and Zoe take it upon themselves to catch the killer themselves, as Gabriel starts turning insane, seeing things. • Act 3: Crucial evidence is found showing Gabriel is the killer. He realises it’s himself that’s the killer. In order to stop the killings he takes his own life.

  3. Mise-en-Scene: Location: • As we wanted the sequence to be shot in a dark basement we decided to use my house as we have easy access to it, it’ll suit the mise-en-scene and during the day when we film it’ll be nice and quiet. • One problem we will have though getting enoughlight into some shots and space to put the cameramight be an issue at times.

  4. Mise-en-Scene: Acting: • Because the killer will be out of shot most of the time but the shots he is in we’ll have him moving really slowly and purposefully knowing exactly what he’s doing. • This makes him seem more supernatural and different from everyone else. Therefore more powerful but still a complete mystery to some.

  5. Mise-en-Scene: Props and Costume: • Props in these scenes will act as icons that would be shown throughout the film telling the audience who it is as would the costume. • This outfit would include a black trench coat – hiding the body and a mask hiding the face. To show he’s psychotic we can lift his head up pulling shoulders back and combing the hair right neatly back to show order. A pentagon necklace pimp cane and claw ring can also sow this sophisticated order and also ritualistic behaviour.

  6. Cinematography: Shots: • Close up shots of the board with news articles and pictures of people with eyes crossed out. A slow shot of this will help show this is the killer and his focus. As a different way of announcing the main crew we can have there names spelt out already on the board so the camera pans across them revealing who they are. • Close ups of the killer putting together his “equipment” preparing himself to go out and kill, this will establish the icons of the killer but not reveal who it is. Is will also include shots from around the apartment. • As a final shot we want to track towards the from door revealing the number 18 and have that as our way of showing the title.

  7. Cinematography: Camera Techniques: • We can have our match on action when the killer picks up his “tools” and really prepares himself. Cutting between these we can increase the pace of it all building tension. • For shots of the bored to stop light from being taken away we can zoom in to bring it closer without getting in the way of light. • We can avoid the killers face to keep the mystery but a lot if shots of him we can have out of focus so he seems like some sort of phantom like he’d act as in the film.

  8. Editing: • Cutting together the shots in a distorted order will allow us to create a feeling of discomfort in this scene and the sense that there is no real time and nothing is right. • In the background we can have a slow bass drum beating in the background keeping beat. Over the top of this we can have some scratches on high guitar strings giving a discomfort jarring in the ears. • As well as this we can make a recording of radio broadcasts reporting on the rise in deaths from recent murders (as scene in the news articles) showing that this is the man responsible. This will be broken up by of radio static and white noise, again jarring the ears.

  9. Summary: • Overall we’re going to set our opening title sequence in a dark room with a mystery man who we can tell is the killer, allowing us to establish his icons, whilst discomforting the viewer. • Themes: Murder mystery, deception, psychological. • To show these during the sequence we’re having a board with target showing he’s insane and the mystery character raises questions to who he is but also that he could be anyone. The dark atmosphere and the music also suggest it’s a murder mystery.
