  1. Room 18 Panther Newshwest@nthurston.k12.wa.us1/10/14 Thank You! Thanks to all the families who helped make my holiday season bright – your warm wishes for the coming year are much appreciated  Nonfiction Features We’re beginning our exploration into the world of nonfiction by taking a close look at the “features” authors use to help guide our reading. You can help by having your child identify things like maps, graphs, captions, glossaries and indexes in books and magazines around the house. Expert Writing Our first drafts of our expert books are nearly complete. This week students have worked on writing powerful leads to their chapters by studying the types of strategies other informational writers use. Next week we’ll begin adding in our own nonfiction features and get these babies ready for publication! Module 5 Math Today we will be taking the module 5 post assessment covering our first division facts (2, 4, 5, & 10) as well as our work with geometry – understanding the differences and similarities among rectangles, rhombuses and squares. I’m sure they’ll do great – We’ve been working hard! Easy Cbm assessments Over the next few weeks students will be taking their winter Easy CBM Assessments. These assessments are used to monitor growth in reading and math and help us determine if any extra support is needed. Feel free to contact me for specific results from any of these assessments. Upcoming Events 1/15 Early Release 1/17 MLK assembly 1/20 No School - MLK Day 1/24 end of semester
