  11. Bar lines • Vertical lines on the staff which separate measures of music.

  12. Half step • A Minor Second

  13. Dance • The physical response to rhythm.

  14. Characteristics • Unique attributes

  15. Brass Winds • Instruments using a cup shaped mouthpiece

  16. Clef • Symbol to indicate the tonal center

  17. Fugue • A melodic presentation using varied melodic and rhythmic alterations to present new interpretations of the melody.

  18. Fugetto • A small or short section in a fugal style.

  19. First ending • The short ending which will send musicians back to a particular place to repeat that section.

  20. Double Bar • Two bars of different size indicating the end of a section or composition.

  22. Da capo al fine` • Return to the beginning and play to the fine`

  23. Counterpoint • Independent movement of musical lines in correlation to each other

  24. Cannon • The simple melodic repetition. It is also called a round.

  25. Brace • Two or more staves joined with a bracket { } indicating a system of music.

  26. Balance • To achieve the aural perception of each instrument or section being of the same or equal volume without dominance by any one instrument or section.

  27. Blend • To create an ensemble sound in which all instruments/sections collectively create one sound rather than individual sounds.

  28. Dynamics • Various degrees of loudness and softness

  29. Forte (f ) • Strong or full

  30. Fortissimo (ff) • Very strong

  31. Fortississimo (fff) • Very, very strong

  32. Pianissimo (pp) • Very soft

  33. Crescendo (cres.) • To get louder

  34. Decrescendo (decres) • To get softer

  35. Diminuendo (dim) • To gradually get softer

  36. Baroque • The historic period between 1600 and 1750 AD

  37. Classical • The historic period between 1750 and 1820 AD

  38. Expressionist • The historic period originating in Germany beginning in the 20th Century.

  39. Experimental • One type of music composed between 1950 and today.

  40. Fusion • The mixing of diverse musical styles originating around 1980.

  42. Consonant Interval • Interval requiring no resolution (change)

  43. Dissonant Interval • Interval requiring resolution (change)
