  1. Thedigestive system Sarah Looman

  2. Main functions • The digestive system digests food • It collects nutrients • Breaks down food for energy

  3. Vocabulary • Mouth- where food enters the body; breaks food into smaller pieces • Esophagus- allows food to pass from the pharynx to the stomach • Stomach-where food is broken down by stomach acid • Small intestines- absorbs nutrients and minerals that were in your food • Liver- detoxification and production of biochemicals used for digestion • Pancreas-produces several hormones that are important • Large intestine- absorb water and pushes out unneeded waste • Anus- where solid waste is distributed • Stomach acid- acid to disolve food • Nutrients- energy for your body that’s in food

  4. Organs in system • Mouth • Esophagus • Stomach • Intestines • Liver • Pancreas

  5. Path food travels through the body • The food enters the mouth where it is broken into smaller pieces for you to swallow. It travels down the esophagus and into the stomach, where the stomach acid in the stomach break down food. It breaks apart the waste and fat from the nutrients and minerals needed by the body. All of the broken down food travels down through the small and large intestines. This process sorts out the waste and keeps the nutrients that was in the food. The waste that is unwanted by the body is pushed out through the anus.

  6. How it fits in the body • The digestive system works in the body with all the systems • The muscular system has muscles that contract to help the food slide down the esophagus better. • The excretory system has the liver that produces biochemicals that help digestion • The nervous system sends messages to move the food out of your system

  7. How it works • When chewing food you break it down with your siliva • Muscles contract to help the food slide down your esphagus • When food is in your stomach it is being broken down by stomach acid • The food is broken into two parts; stuff your body needs and stuff it doesn’t • The food is pushed through the small and large intestines where the nutrients are taken in to the body and the waste is pushed through • The liver produces biochemicals to help the digestion process • When it gets through the intestines, it is pushed out through the anus

  8. Fun facts • Most of the digestion occurs in the small intestine • The small intestine is 22 feet long • 270,000 Americans develop cancer in the gastrointestional track each year • Cells on the inner walls of the stomach secrete 2 liters of hydrochloric acid each day • Hydrochloric acid helps kill bacteria • The stomach has a thick lining of saliva to protect its self from the acid • Stomach rumbling happens anytime not just when your hungry
