  1. Type of Heat Exchangers By Cao Yu, Marcus, Ray Yan

  2. What is heat exchanger? • A heat exchanger is a device built for efficient heat transfer from one medium to another. • the mediums are separated by a solid wall so that they never mix, or the media are in direct contact

  3. Common uses

  4. Type of Heat Exchanger • 1 Shell and tube heat exchanger • 2 Plate heat exchanger • 3 Regenerative heat exchanger • 4 Adiabatic wheel heat exchanger • 5 Plate Fin heat exchanger • 6 Fluid heat exchangers

  5. Type of Heat Exchangers • 7 Waste Heat Recovery Units • 8 Dynamic scraped surface heat exchanger • 9 Phase-change heat exchangers

  6. Shell and tube heat exchanger

  7. Shell and tube heat exchanger • It is the most common type of heat exchanger in oil refineries and other large chemical processes, • is suited for higher-pressure applications. • consists of a shell with a bundle of tubes inside it.

  8. Shell and tube heat exchanger • One fluid runs through the tubes, and another fluid flows over the tubes to transfer heat between the two fluids. • The set of tubes is called a tube bundle, and may be composed by several types of tubes: plain, longitudinally finned, etc. • For more details, please kindly refer to group 2 presentation. :D

  9. Plate heat exchanger

  10. Plate heat exchanger • uses metal plates to transfer heat between two fluids. • major advantage is that fluids are exposed to a much larger surface area because the fluids spread out over the plates. • need well-sealed gaskets to prevent the fluids from escaping

  11. Regenerative heat exchanger • more commonly known as regenerator

  12. Regenerative heat exchanger • the flow through the heat exchanger is cyclical and periodically changes direction. • a regenerator mixes the two fluid flows. • The temperature profile remains at a nearly constant temperature, and this includes the fluid entering and exiting each end.

  13. Adiabatic wheel heat exchanger

  14. Adiabatic wheel heat exchanger • uses an intermediate fluid or solid store to hold heat, which is then moved to the other side of the heat exchanger to be released. • it is acceptable for a small amount of mixing to occur between the two streams

  15. Plate Fin heat exchanger

  16. Plate Fin heat exchanger • This type of heat exchanger uses "sandwiched" passages containing fins to increase the effectivity of the unit. • The designs include crossflow and counterflow coupled with various fin configurations such as straight fins, offset fins and wavy fins.

  17. Fluid heat exchangers

  18. Fluid heat exchangers

  19. Fluid heat exchangers • This is a heat exchanger with a gas passing upwards through a shower of fluid, and the fluid is then taken elsewhere before being cooled. • This is commonly used for cooling gases whilst also removing certain impurities, thus solving two problems at once.

  20. Waste Heat Recovery Units

  21. Waste Heat Recovery Units • recovers heat from a hot gas stream while transferring it to a working medium, typically water or oils. • The hot gas stream can be the exhaust gas from a gas turbine or a diesel engine or a waste gas from industry or refinery.

  22. Dynamic scraped surface heat exchanger • can be used either to heat a liquid to evaporate (or boil) it or used as condensers to cool a vapor and condense it to a liquid

  23. Dynamic scraped surface heat exchanger

  24. Direct Contact Heat Exchangers

  25. Direct Contact Heat Exchangers • Direct contact heat exchangers involve heat transfer between hot and cold streams of two phases in the absence of a separating wall. • can be classified as: • Gas – liquid • Immiscible liquid –liquid • Solid-liquid or solid- gas
