  3. A New Look • Redesigned flag • Addition of a slogan, index • Refined logo • Introduction of color for the FIRST time in school history

  4. Before and After March 2013 January 2014

Advertising • Over 40 area businesses advertised with TBF this year. • 80% of businesses advertised for 2 or more months. • 30% of businesses advertised for 4 or more months. • 20% of businesses advertised for the entire year. • This year, students made almost 5X the amount of money in ad sales as last yearand approximately 2X the amount of that earned in the 2011-2012 school year. • The student advertising sales schedule has been modified in order to maximize profit and minimize time spent out of core classes.

Achieving Goals • Increase printing to 1 issue per month (a 3 issue increase) • Print in color, maintaining printing costs with ad sales • Jacket • Double Truck (center spread) • Maintain a monthly 8-12 page paper • Provide students with a predictable schedule for buying/selling papers • Notify students of date/time papers will be sold • Provide MMS and other campuses with an opportunity to be represented and purchase copies of the paper*

Achieving Goals, continued • Sell copies of the paper to members of the community* • Home sporting events • Local businesses • Support printing costs with ad sales • Provide free copies of the paper to advertisers* • Increase advertising base • Return the paper to a profit* • Increase enrollment (Journalism class)* • Run in-house ads for fundraisers, to solicit student action, online editions of The Bear Facts, etc.

Establishing Room for Growth • Improve on previously met goals • especially items marked with an asterisk (*) • Transition from a MHS paper to a WHOLE district paper, with regular paper sales at multiple campuses • Generate a workable system for receiving news items from teachers and clubs from all campuses • Return The Bear Facts to an award-winning paper • Incorporate aspects of Broadcast Journalism into the existing course • Get Journalism students involved in the weekly radio address • Instate a solution for covering out-of-town sporting events

  10. Room for Growth, continued • Increase readership and student involvement • Increase paper sales at home games and other campuses • Reinstate the MHS Literary Magazine, formerly knownas Ebony Rose • Aid students in acquiring Journalism scholarships • Incorporate additional technology

What improvements, if any, have you noticed? “The Bear Facts now includes every person and club; it isn’t biased towards just one group. I enjoy it!” “This year’s stories are more relevant to the student population…Keep up the good work!” “ More color this year, right? …[I like] Gus’s random trivia…Bear Facts = Best paper in Mena.”

  13. Conclusion • We have copies of TBF for each of you • Special thanks to Molly Lindsey and her Digital Communications classes • Approximately 40 students work on the paper each month • So far we have 15 new Journalism applications for next year • We are very proud of their accomplishments
