  4. European Standard - EN • Normative document • Available in the 3 official CEN languages (English, French, German) • Does not conflict with the content of any other CEN/CENELEC standard • Value of EN derives from characteristics of its development

  7. CEN Enquiry • To assess possible agreement to adopt a draft document as an EN by: • Circulation of a draft document for public comments at national level (public enquiry) • Consolidation of national views on the draft document

  8. Standstill - Working together towards one goal • No national individual action, during the preparation or after the approval of an EN, that would prejudice the European work • No publication or revision of national standard not in line with an existing EN

  9. Implementation • CEN National Members implement an EN by: • Giving it the status of national standard i.e. • publication of an identical text • endorsement • Withdrawing any conflicting national standards

  11. Technical Specification – CEN/TS • Normative document produced and approved by TC • No standstill • No public Enquiry • Technical Committee Approval (TCA) • Produced at least in one CEN official language • Review: at least every 3 years

Purpose • A CEN/TS is established with the purpose of: • publication of aspects in support of the European market • guidance • specifications in evolving technologies and experimental circumstances • But also when a WI that is to become an EN has: • insufficient support at CEN Enquiry • no consensus before Formal Vote

  13. Reminder • CEN/TSs may compete with each other • CEN/TSs do not conflict with the content of any CEN/CENELEC standards • The CEN/TS must be withdrawn if the publication of a subsequent EN brings the CEN/TS into conflict with that EN
