  3. Aqueous Solutions • Solutions in which the dissolving medium is water. • Water is a special solvent. • Why?

  4. Water is a Polar Molecule • It has a partial negative charge on one end. •  • It has a partial positive charge on the other. • 

  5. Why is the water molecule bent? • Relative to H, O is highly electronegative. • O has 6 valence electrons • Using the Lewis Dot model, draw H-O-H. • Look at the balloon model. • Water is bent!

  7. Solvation of an ionic solute. • Equation: MNM (s) M+(aq) +NM-(aq) What are (s), (aq), (g) and (l)?

  8. Solubility: the ability to dissolve varies greatly. • Like dissolves like • Polar molecules H2O, CH3OH and CH3CH2OH • Non polar molecules like fats and oils. • The longer the carbon chain, the less polar the molecule (demo?)

  9. Electrolytes • Charged particles in solution that conduct a charge. • Strong electrolytes ionize completely. • Weak electrolytes partially ionize. • Non electrolytes do not ionize.
