  2. All was well, but….. • Satellite images from SOHO show that a comet approaching the sun was blown of course by an usually large solar flare. It headed straight for EARTH!!!

  3. More satellite images….. Snow at end of this movie is the effect of the Solar winds reaching the satellite ….electrical interference ….keep this in mind.

  7. Blueprint

  8. Zone 1 Stability: Very Good Collapsed: No There are no collapsed walls…so very little debris.

  9. Zone 2 Stability: Marginal Some unknown debris. Where meteor entered building – location unknown. Collapsed: Yes. Second floor may have collapsed.

  10. Zone 3 Stability: Low Collapsed: Partially There will be collapsed walls. Since the second level has had renovations, we do not have an updated blueprint.

  11. Zone 4 Stability: Very Low Very dangerous area…structures may collapse without warning. Collapsed: Yes, completely This means that there will be lots of unpredictable debris. We suspect that most of the second level above this zone has collapsed completely down onto the first level.

  12. Common Difficulties • Rubble and debris. • Collapsed objects may block entry ways and create steep/tilted inclines. • Beware of unstable structures. • Robot should be able to maneuver through narrow hallways and around office furniture. • Robot should be able to climb and descend stairs.

  13. 8 People trapped Conditions of victims: Alive, with minor to severe injuries Locations Unknown – Probably not all together, scattered through out building. Latest Information

  14. Your Challenge • Find as many of the victims as possible • Determine their condition and location • Locating the victims who are in the poorest conditions will be most helpful to the ERT so more importance will be placed on their identification. • Due to structural damage to the building, you will have 12 minutes to find the victims before the building collapses!

  15. Questions? We may not have answers.

  16. Grading Criteria On a per zone basis: • Finding a person: 5-25 pts • Identifying a person: 5 pts • Clearing a zone: +/- 5 pts If you claim a zone is clear, and you are correct: 5 points. If you claim a zone is clear, and you are incorrect: -5 points. If you don’t claim anything: 0 pts. Clearing a zone means you believe you have found everyone.

  17. Memo from NASA Specialists • Speed vs. Power • Lower your center of gravity, or increase your base size • Ground Clearance • NO CHEATING! • Stairs? • Loss of treads, wheels, gears, or CAMERA! • Range of Vision • Nothing EVER goes as planned

  18. One last thing: PRACTICE Extra lab hours Thursday night
