  1. FLUKA 2014 release Alfredo Ferrari CERN, Geneva Switzerland CERN, 22/11/2013

  2. (Semi)-stable development version • Provided by Alfredo at regular intervals (2-4 months typically) • Contains all latest developments/tools • Provided with the aim of: • Allow extensive testing and debugging • Perform critical calculations with the most updated physics when relevant (eg +, prompt photons) • Perform complex calculations with much more user friendly tools (eg new voxel format, integrated  scoring) • Perform calculations impossible with the production version (eg SR calculations) AF/PS, ELI, 21/11/2013

  3. Development version use • Whichever study/publication/presentation making use of results obtained with the devel version must be agreed “a priori” with the Collaboration • It should in general include the relevant developers as co-authors • Notwithstanding the above, unless the work concerns with a specific “practical” task of a lab (eg shielding of a facility), every effort should be done to involve other interested members of the Collaboration AF/PS, ELI, 21/11/2013

  4. Development version: distribution • How to make it available ? • Where? • Under which protection? • How to assure that it does not get disseminated by mistake to people external to the Collaboration? AF/PS, ELI, 21/11/2013

  5. Urgent priorities: • Partially neutralized or H- beam transport, and radioactive/excited isotope decay in flight • Update the decay, level and mass databases Alfredo, Vasilis?, ? • Make them consistent and check for artifacts Alfredo, Vasilis?, ? • Make the decays as analogue as possible (essential for in flight decays) Alfredo, Vasilis?, ? • Adapt the transport framework to deal with unstable nuclei, both radioactive and/or excited to long-lived levels or to forbidden decays (like 0+ - 0+ transitions) Alfredo, ?? • Adapt the transport framework to deal with not fully stripped charge states (including proper masses, stripping of possibly energetic electrons when entering materials etcetc) Alfredo, ?? • Implement the crystal channeling machinery developed by Philippe Philippe, Francesco, Alfredo • Deuteron interactions Paola,?? AF/PS, ELI, 21/11/2013

  6. Urgent priorities cont.d: • Implement the revised version of DPMJET-3 Anatoli, Ralph, Stefan, Alfredo • Implement the Fluka-Sixtrack coupling through ad hoc “institutionalized” routines, instead of user routines Alessio, Pablo, Alfredo • Implement the PET scanner scoring (Pablo) through ad hoc “institutionalized” routines, instead of user routines Cristina, Pablo • Improving and smoothing the transition resonance model-DPM for N-N reactions around 3-10 GeVAlfredo, ?? • Make the FLUGG interface 64 bit compliant and at the same time bring all pointers to 64 bits for future developments Paola, Luillo, ?? • Revise, understand, benchmark the neutrino cross section and interaction package George, Paola, Mattias, Alfredo, Maddalena… AF/PS, ELI, 21/11/2013

  7. 2014 RELEASE AF/PS, ELI, 21/11/2013

  8. (Un)expected issues requiring urgent fix: • Too low Coulomb barriers for ’s and other light ion reactions on medium-heavy nuclei  overestimated cross sections below 15-25 MeV Andrea M, ?? • Too low deuteron emission for reactions like (p,d)/(n,d) on medium/heavy nuclei in the pre-equilibrium regime. The fix is likely to extend what has been already implemented for light targets (see next slides) Alfredo, ?? • While looking for “improving and smoothing the transition resonance model-DPM for N-N”,  obsolete resonance production cross section and branchings for nucleon-nucleon interactions (Comfort…), urgent to fix Alfredo, ?? • Large pT tail for high energy interactions systematically underestimated (even if tiny, still important in some cases) Alfredo, ?? AF/PS, ELI, 21/11/2013

  9. Pointwise neutron cross section Not for next release, to be ramped up just after the urgent priorities • Define a format Alfredo, Vasilis • Processing chain (fortran please!) possibly as much as possible with NJOY ( compatibility with the corresponding group ’s)  uniform grid? Vasilis, ?? • Post-processing tests modeled as per group ’s ?? • Fully analogue (it requires a lot of work for reactions like (n,n), (n,2n), (n,np) etc), quite some work done (Alfredo) for a general implementation Alfredo, Francesco ?, ?? • Re-utilize as much as possible the format/tools already developed for some special cases • Start with ’s, then move to secondary particle distributions in steps AF/PS, ELI, 21/11/2013

  10. A few other developments (~ready): • Interactions of 3He and 3H (through BME) (done, benchmarks?) Andrea M. ?, Francesco ?, Carlo M.? •  decays (done) but serious inconsistencies in the database • Biological dose (D, D2 scoring)(done) • Extended voxel file format (done, backported to fluka2011.2b) • (Much) faster voxel initialization and faster run-time voxel tracking (done, backported to fluka2011.2b) • Synchrotron radiation (done) • (Anti)hyperon interactions in PEANUT (initial implem.) (done) • Errors/isospin violations in NN, KN Hadrin channels(done) • IGRF11 Earth magnetic field for GCR’s (done) • New Earth magn. field treatment/options for GCR’s (done) • New estimators LGH-IONS, HVY-IONS, E+E-GAMM (done) • Optical photons as beam (done, to be tested) Vincenzo?? AF/PS, ELI, 21/11/2013

  11. Other developments/proposals: • Reworking phnuc. ’s in the delta regionAlberto, Carlo, Alfredo • Reworking the quasi-deuteron region (ongoing, see later) • Light ions (d,3H,3He,) peripheral interactions in rQMDFrancesco ?, Alfredo, ?? • Isomer production by low energy neutronsMatteo ?, ?? • === up to this point (hopefully) for the release === • NIEL and DPA following bremss. and pair production George ?? • Impact ionization (at least for K,L by e+/e-) (started, important) • (Photo)fission, angular momentum… (ongoing) • Refined Glauber cross sections for light nuclei (ongoing) • Coherent pion production in  interactionsPaola, ?? • === up to this point some manpower available === • Electro-nuclear interactions George ?? • Electric field (started) • Light ion elastic interactions (nothing!) • Electron interaction below 1 keV(nothing! help from outside?) • Special neutron sources for Pu-Be, Am-Be sources (nothing!) • Transition radiation (nothing!) AF/PS, ELI, 21/11/2013

  12. Photonuclear interactions: • Discovered and ~fixed one issue with low quasi-deuteron cross sections Alberto, Alfredo • Revision of some GDR cross sections (eg208Pb) which showed significant inconsistencies with other evaluations Alberto ?, ?? • Improvements of the (,x) cross sections in the resonance region up to few GeV’sAlberto, Carlo M. • New spin-parity treatment in evaporation extended beyond the Fermi-breakup for low excitation (,x) reactions! Alfredo, Paola, ? AF/PS, ELI, 21/11/2013

  13. How to accelerate FLUKA calculations for PET and prompt photon calculations • Optimization of production and transport thresholds (implemented) • Inelastic interaction biasing (implemented) • Further “tuning” as a function of particle energy Alfredo, ? • Multiple “replicas” of radioactive decays (implemented) • Direction biasing of annihilation photons (implemented) • “annular” det. biasing to be added (in progress) Cristina, Roberto N. ? • Multiple “replicas” of final (gamma) de-excitation (work in progress) ?? • Direction biasing of de-excitation photons including “annular” det. biasing(work in progress) ?? • Overall testing and benchmarking ?? AF/PS, ELI, 21/11/2013

  14. Next release: new defaults • Heavy evaporation (or an intermediate setting) as default • Peanut up to high energies as default • Coalescence as default: deuterons badly needed! • All urgent priorities + … • New (DAMAGE) and/or revised defaults (ongoing) • Which other ongoing development beyond “green” ones is felt necessary (impact ionization…)? • Which date (in June, Dec 13 – Feb 14, now Mar 14 –May 14 before impossible) • Which testing procedures? • Which versions (g77, gfortran >= 4.6, Mac??)? AF/PS, ELI, 21/11/2013

  15. Testing and documentation: • Provide (reasonably complex, no user routines if possible) input cases for testing and code stressing • Run those tests, possibly also with the procedure for random number consistency checks • Compare with previous version results, spotting possible unexpected behaviours • Test and document the new features AF/PS, ELI, 21/11/2013
