  2. Current NASA Status • NASA is undergoing a major redirection in its programs: • The next generation orbital lift vehicle development as an internal NASA project has been terminated… • Plans call for this capability to be taken over by commercial entities with guaranteed government contracts… • NASA will continue to support the ISS using Russian launch capability for the next 4-5 years before US commercial vehicles are available… • NASA will begin to refocus its research on the exploration of the Solar System, including the development of new propulsion technologies, spacecraft designs, and the associated support infrastructures… • There should be opportunities for FLUKA and Medipix as this redirection takes shape… • NASA’s budget will increase by1.6 G$/yr (which is 1.4 G$ to small) Houston FLUKA Activity Update

  3. Current Houston Group Activity • Toni is working mainly on simulations in support of the Darkside Dark-Matter expt. (but he is continuing to work on FLULA development…) • Brandon Reddellis completing the analysis of the AGS data examining the overlap between RQMD and DPMJET. • Nic Stoffle is working on developing a FLUKA simulation for the Medipix detector response to heavy-ions. • Dilan Minthaka is working on ALICE and will use FLUKA to simulate the upcoming PS & SPS Test Beam EMCal runs, as well as to look into enhancing the ALICE TPC particle ID resolution above 2 GeV by fitting the distribution of dE/dx values for the charge voxels. 4. Medipix (TimePix)Heavy Ion Measurements Houston FLUKA Activity Update

  5. FLUKA Medipix (TimePix)Heavy Ion Simulations Note the ~10% differences in the peak location with the measurements being 10% lower then the simulations… However, the widths are the same! Houston FLUKA Activity Update

  10. Data Were Taken For: • Beams: C, Si & Fe • Energies: ~3, 5 and 10 GeV/A • Targets: C, Al, Fe & Cu + Several Thick Targets Houston FLUKA Activity Update

  11. RQMD & DPMJET 3 v. Data C on C Si on Fe 3.4 GeV/A 3.4 GeV/A 5.4 GeV/A 5.4 GeV/A 10.8 GeV/A 10.8 GeV/A Houston FLUKA Activity Update

  12. RQMD v. DPMJET 3 in FLUKA10.8 GeV/A C on CAngular distributions (vs. cos q) nucleons pions DPMJET 3 multiplicity is consistently ~ 2 times too small! Houston FLUKA Activity Update

  13. Recommendations • Move the crossover point up to > 10 GeV/A from the present point centered at 5 GeV/A • Explore the reasons for the dip at 90° in DPMJET 3. • Look into multiplicity deficit in DPMJET 3. Houston FLUKA Activity Update
