1. Early Literacy/Phonics& Maths

2. Purpose • Help parents to help their children with Early Literacy/ Phonics and Maths at home. • Look at what the children need to achieve by the end of the Reception Year

3. Early Years Literacy • Communication and Language-role-play, introducing storyline and narrative into their play and listening and responding. • Reading-Continuing a rhyming string, hearing and saying initial sounds in words, segmenting and blending the sounds in simple words, reading words in simple sentences. • Understanding that information can be retrieved from books and computers.

4. Helping at home • Reading at night –comment in the reading record . Blue letter sound books/ cursive letter books • Discussing the stories with the children • Playing games with their word cards • Providing a wide range of books for the children to have opportunities to enjoy stories at home • Puppets • Interactive stories –Oxford Owls • Letters and sounds website-support early phonics through games

5. Writing table-lots of opportunities eg party invitations, cards etc • Giving meaning to marks they draw/write • Using paints, felts, chalks, exciting pens etc • Breaking the flow of speech into words • Hearing and saying sounds in words before they write them down • Segmenting sounds in words • Name and sound letters of the alphabet • Using clear letters-forming them correctly • Cursive letter formation practice (example powerpoint) • Writing names, labels and captions and moving on to writing simple sentences. • The children need these opportunities at home • Celebrating their wonderful achievements Early Years Writing

6. Maths • Need to count reliably to 20 • Order numbers to 20. Begin to form numbers. • Say what number is one more/ less • Add and subtract 2 single digit numbers and count on or back to find the answer • Solving problems involving- doubling, halving and sharing • Eg How could we share these 10 sweets between 2 children. Numbers

7. Children are encouraged to develop a mental picture of the number system in their heads to use for calculation. They should experience practical calculation opportunities using a wide variety of equipment, e.g. small world play, role play, counters, cubes etc. They develop ways of recording calculations using pictures, etc. • Children who are ready may record this as 8 – 5 = 3

8. Helping at home • Providing counting opportunities –counting sweets, toys, cars, teddies. • Looking out for numbers around the environment • Baking-Counting out the ingredients • Numbers to recognise/ order eg large numbers outdoors • Washing line –numbers • Interactive games-interactive resources topmarks (links to useful website on the school website) • Adding/ subtracting toys – eg3 teddies plus 2 teddies equals ?? PURPLE MASH WEBSITE- MINI MASH Each child has their own username and password and can access a range of activities at home. Nice activities to support the different areas of learning for the foundation stage

9. Shape, space and measures • Begin to use mathematical names for ‘solid’ 3d shapes and 2d shapes and describe them • Describe positions eg next to, behind. • Order items by height and length • Order items by weight • Use familiar objects or shapes to recreate patterns and build models • Use everyday language related to time eg in the morning/ afternoon • Use everyday language related to money Shape, space and measures

10. Helping at home • Looking at the shapes of everyday objects • Building models using shapes and junk material • Measuring ingredients • Role-play shopping and using money • Look at prices at the supermarket • Ask the children if they can identify longer/ shorter/ heavier and lighter items

11. E Safety *We teach the children how to stay safe when using a computer/ Ipad. *They listen to Smartie the Penguin story and learn a rhyme about keeping safe. *We reiterate what to do if something happens whilst they are using the computers in school and at home. E Safety
