  5. Phoenix Islands Protected Area Second largest MPA in the world:   158,500sq mi (410 500 km2) …and also one of the most remote www.phoenixislands.org

  6. The (initial) Problem… Can remote protected areas get adequate and affordable surveillance? The Answer: YES

  7. Lots of (existing, new & emerging) Options…

  8. New Problems, however... • Lack of coordination • Redundancy of efforts Solution: Stop the fisheries silo and exceptions (no AIS, no SOLAS, no registry, etc.) & Treat all maritime traffic the same… It is all part of Maritime Domain Awareness
