  1. GIS Data Resources Ruppert Grauberger Chief, Mapping & Photogrammetry Division of Engineering

  2. GIS data • GIS data come in various formats, such as “shapefiles”, geodatabases (feature class), coverages, raster files • GIS vector files consist of the spatial entities (e.g., points, lines, polygons) AND the attributes of that entity (tabular) • Raster files are arrays of “pixels” that contain discrete values • GIS data files are not simple files, and a special data management module is used to copy/move/paste files

  3. Sources of GIS data • On-line • Cal-Atlas Geospatial Clearinghouse • http://www.atlas.ca.gov • not extensive • ArcGIS Online • ESRI and government agency services • directly import into ArcMap • http://www.arcgisonline.com • Geospatial One Stop • federal government clearinghouse • links and searches • http://www.geodata.gov • Division or Section data library • shared drives • i.e. DFM: \\gis1\data • Colleagues • DWR_GIS email list • (to subscribe, go to http://listhost2.water.ca.gov/mailman/listinfo/dwr_gis_workgroup) • DWR Enterprise Geospatial Data Library (coming soon ...) • Image Server “beta version” is currently up and running

  4. DWR Enterprise Image Server Particulars for connecting are: • 1. Start in ArcCatalog. • 2. Expand GIS Servers in the TOC. • 3. Double click Add ArcGIS Server. • 4. Select Use GIS Server • 5.
