  2. Who is believed to be founder of Hinduism? • No one person is the founder of Hinduism but it developed over a period of time. It is believed to be the oldest religion in the world and started before recorded history. • What is history called before it was written down? • Prehistory • What is history called when recording began? • Ancient History

  3. Who migrated into northern India and what is their role in the creation of Hinduism? • The Aryans are believed to have migrated into northern India because of plague, drought, or invasion. • Aryan Migration into India: http://www.eduplace.com/kids/socsci/ca/books/bkf3/imaps/AC_07_228_aryan/AC_07_228_aryan.html • They brought elements of their culture from central Asia into Hinduism in India including the Vedas.

What is Vedism and what is the importance of Vedas in the beginning of Hinduism? • Vedism is an early Hindu religion that is believed to have come before modern Hinduism. • Vedas are an important collection of sacred texts in Sanskrit (orally then written) that lay out the basic beliefs of Hinduism and are sacred to Hindus even today. • What are the Vedas similar to that we discussed in the chapter about Judaism? • the Torah

  5. The Vedas were taught orally for hundreds of years under the creation of what? • The creation of the written form of Sanskrit or the ancient language of India that the Vedas are written in.

  6. What is Brahmanism and what is its importance in Indian Society? • Brahmanism (Vedism) is an ancient Indian religion in which the Brahmans (priests and religious scholars) are the dominant class • Why are the Brahmans the dominant class in Hindu society?

  7. Caste System • Top level • Brahmins, or the priests and religious scholars • Second Level • Kshatriyas: Rulers and Warriors • Third Level • Vaishas: herders and merchants

Caste System • Fourth Level • Shudras: Servants • Fifth Level---- Added on later • Untouchables or the Pariahs/Harijans • This was a group Hindus considered low or dirty such as those people handling garbage and dead animals. • They often lived in their own neighborhoods because other Hindus avoided touching them or even looking at them.

Untouchables Today • Today these groups are still in countries such as India, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh • These “untouchables” are called Dalits. • They are still assigned as untouchable and ostracized, or excluded, from society. • There are believed to be 166 million in India with a population of over 1.2 billion people today or 16.2 percent of India’s population.

  10. India • This is second largest population in the world behind China with 1.3 billion people and USA is third with 314 million people. • Discrimination based on caste was prohibited in the Constitution of India but still remains today.
