  1. Persuasive Speeches Make it Amazing!!

  2. Pick a strategy • There are three strategies we can use when creating a persuasive speech: • Facts and Credibility (Ethos) – Establish your credibility, present information in a way that your audience will look to you for the truth • Emotion (Pathos) – Appeal to their emotion, facts should still be used but persuade the audience to an emotion. Fear, Disgust, Amazement. • Ethics and Reason (Logos) – Provide rationale and evidence for your viewpoint. Convince the audience to your way of thinking.

  3. Your Strategy • Knowing how you will choose to appeal to your audience will help you to stay focused. • You only have 1 minute you will not be able to touch on all 3 so make sure you are picking just 1. • Supporting information will be needed for your speech to be effective • Examples • Statistics • Testimonies • Definitions and

  4. Get There Attention!!! • How are you starting the speech? • Be careful opening with a question…Make sure it’s not worded in a way that will encourage the audience to respond (it will take away from your time) • Humor or a Story is a good way to draw the audience’s attention. • Layout a hypothetical situation to get buy in from the audience

  5. What’s next? • Pick 1 or 2 issues to focus on. Don’t give the audience too much to process. • Make those 1 or 2 issues strong and provide information so that the audience has to agree with you. • See your hand out for deductive and inductive reasoning. • Be confident. Don’t present the ideas with any uncertainty it will damage your credibility • Fact check your sources…Everyone in here will be an expert if your information is wrong someone will know…and again your credibility will be lost.

  6. You need to be an expert on your points • Your audience will be able to question you for 1 minute after your speech….You need to know your facts and information completely. • Take the time to review what your opposition might say or question you on. Make sure you know how to counter their points.

  7. Delivery • You might write a great speech but 90% of a speech is the way it’s delivered. • Speak Clearly • Speak Loudly • Make sure you know how to say all of the words in your speech • Read out loud if something is a struggle see if you can re-word it • Stand up straight and look around at your audience, don’t read and don’t stare at just one spot in the room. • Change your tone…pick words to emphasize, to repeat, to say more slowly. Change things up…Keep their attention!!!

  8. Let’s see and hear some examples. • Speech: Angela Davis – Civil Rights Advocate • http://americanradioworks.publicradio.org/features/blackspeech/adavis.html • You Tube Presentation – No audio, but look at what is being provided. • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l6GOhttItm8

  9. Now it’s your turn • Take the next 5 minutes to go through your speech. Make any changes that you think will be useful. • Take the time if you think it’s perfect to identify what phrases, words or statements that you will focus on or say differently. • Is there anything you would add? What are you going to do this weekend to find it?
