The Pilgrims Leave England • Like the Pilgrims the Puritans wanted out of England • In the 1620s Charles I persecuted them • In 1630, about 900 Puritans sailed on 11 ships • Formed the Massachusetts Bay company • Lead by John Winthrop • Planned to create a new Jerusalem – “a City upon a Hill” • This would be an example to all Puritans in Ma Bay

  4. The MA Bay Colony • Founded several settlements • The main one – Boston • Each town had its own elected assembly • They worshipped as they pleased • BUT they did NOT allow religious tolerance Puritans in Ma Bay

These religious disagreements led to founding of other colonies • Roger Williams • Wanted a complete split from the Church of England • Did not like how land was being taken from the Native Americans • He bought land from the N.A. and founded the town of Providence in what would become RI • In 1644 RI was given a charter which included religious tolerance • Even included Jews New Colonies

  6. These religious disagreements led to founding of other colonies • Anne Hutchinson’s Dissent • Questioned the Puritan rules • Put on trial and expelled • Founded the city of Portsmouth New Colonies

  7. Settling Connecticut • John Hooker founded Hartford, CT • John Wheelwright founded Exeter, New Hampshire • NH was originally part of CT New Colonies

  8. Puritan Beliefs • Churches should handle their own affairs • People should work hard • Live in strong, stable families Growth and Change

Each puritan town governed itself • Town meetings • This was their assembly • Only male head of households were allowed • Set taxes • Elected representatives • Could speak your mind • Became an area of small towns where people knew each other • Worked in various industries • Fishing and ship building became the main industries Growth and Change

  10. King Phillip’s War • By the 1670s the pop. Of N.A. was 1/10 its pre-Columbian numbers • 12,000 down from 120,000+ • Metacom (a.k.a. Metacomet) His English nickname was King Phillip • Wanted to stop Puritans from expanding • The war eventually involved many N.A. groups • Took both sides • Ended when he was captured and killed • 12 English settlements were destroyed Growth and Change

  11. Puritan Influence Declines • By the 1670s the generation had different ideas • Born in the colonies • Less religious idealism • Wanted to run their farms or businesses • Boston and the other town were becoming successful business centers Growth and Change
