  4. How did they get to Massachusetts? • They were headed to an area just north of Jamestown, but were blown off course. • Because of not being where they were supposed to land, they were outside the boundary of rules for their charter so they wrote the

What happens during the first year? • Half of them died the first winter. • Native Americans helped them by showing them how to plant crops using fish for fertilizer. • (Notice, the Pilgrims were not asking the Native Americans to feed them. They were asking for help so that they could feed themselves.) • After the first successful harvest, they partied together to celebrate their friendship: Thanksgiving!!

  8. What was the New England Way? • Each congregation of Puritans set up their own town with their church at the center. • It was illegal to not attend • Going to church and hard work was the most important thing to these people. • It made the New England colonies very successful.

Some disagree with the Puritans and leave: • Roger Williams leaves to found Rhode Island. • Anne Hutchinson was forced to leave and she went to Rhode Island too. • Thomas Hooker took his congregation and founded Connecticut. • They wrote the Fundamental Orders of Connecticut which expanded voting rights.

  10. Yes, there really were • But they didn’t fly around on broomsticks and cast magic spells. In fact, they were really just pesty old women. The young girls in the village had found a way to be left alone. But this was serious. At least 20 people were tried, found guilty and executed for being “witches.”
