  2. Top Tips • Try to pause between the themes of your talk • Do not rush your words and gabble • Refer to your notes to prevent getting lost in the middle and waffling • Smile and remember to speak clearly and deliberately - this will make you appear confident. • On the day, act fearlessly and believe that you are going to be successful in delivering an entertaining and informative presentation. • Have confidence in yourself and in your message

  3. Managing Question and Answers • During the Introduction say when you would like to take questions • Questions at the end are preferable as it is easier to keep to time • Questions during the presentation should only be taken if your subject is technical • The audience may need to be able to ask questions so that they can understand the points which follow). • If the question involves a theme you will be dealing with later on then say so (but always check subsequently that the question has been answered

  4. Cont. • When you get a question, repeat it to confirm your understanding and to ensure that everyone else has heard • Answer at the right level for your audience (better to keep it simple rather than too complex) • If you can’t answer, be honest and get the name of the questioner indicating that you will get back to them with an answer or a possible source for an answer

  5. Slide Do’s and Don’ts • “PowerPoint doesn’t give presentations – PowerPoint makes slides” it include 50% white space • make each slide stand on its own-1 main point for each slide • use animation but don’t overuse it • include written conclusion for every graph • use dark text and bold • use formatting and color to emphasize • use sans serif fonts (like Arial)

  6. Slide Do’s and Don’ts • Don’t use yellow text • Don’t include unrelated pictures • Don’t do serif fonts (like Times New Roman) • Don’t use a dark background • Harder to read, especially from the back • More likely to put people asleep • Handouts often don’t look very good • Don’t go too fast • Don’t point at computer, point at the screen • Don’t pace-Don’t be hyperactive • You shouldn’t put everything on the slide

  7. Slide Do’s and Don’ts • check your spelling for mistakes • use a template if using PowerPoint • put title slide at the end • use a light background like this • use the slides as a cue -Let audience read • use pointers sparingly • relax, use nerves to your advantage Breathe deeply, pause as needed

  8. Delivery Do’s and Don’ts • Do be passionate about the topic • Have fun, this is your opportunity • If your audience doesn’t know why your topic is important, you’ve lost them • practice • Record yourself, tape yourself, or use a mirror • Reading through slides does not count as practice
