  1. Judging a Book By Its Cover… Protecting yourself and securing your future

  2. Band of Gold • What does it mean to be a Citadel graduate? • What expectations do people have of Citadel Cadets? • Are your actions consistent both in and out of uniform?

  3. Thinking Ahead: • Sooner or later, everyone in the room will need to apply for a job, or in the nearer future, maybe an internship. • What are your credentials for getting a job or internship? • Break class into four groups. • Make a list of things employers (even the military) look for when hiring people (5 minutes) • Share with the larger group (5 minutes)

  4. Employers hire based on: • Resumes • Extra curricular activities • College background • Personality • Background checks • Recommendations

  5. Background Checks • Most private sector and government workplaces incorporate background checks. • What is a background check? • A thorough investigation of the candidate’s employment, education, and social history that helps ensure the employer that the candidate is the person he or she claims to be. • Sometimes, background checks expose a different picture than the candidate reported through resumes, interviews, and applications.

  6. Perception is in the eye of the beholder Resume Version of candidate Google version of candidate

  7. The www resume • What can be accessed during a background check? • “Googling” a potential employee • Checking Facebook, MySpace, Youtube, etc. • Checking Sex Offender Registry • Checking Police Records • Checking Court Records

  8. Who would you hire?

  9. Whom did you choose? • Which candidate does your group think would be the best company intern? • Explain your decision to the larger group

  10. Background check change your mind?

  11. Assault: an intentional act by one person that creates an apprehension in another of an imminent harmful or offensive contact Will your potential employer understand that you thought you were “just giving the freshmen a ‘real’ knob year?” Assault defined:

  12. Round 2 • Let’s try again. Which college graduate would you hire to work for your company? • We need three new “candidates” to go to the front… • Three new “resumes” handed out • Five new questions by the groups • Click to next slide while “interviewing”

  13. Who Would You Hire?

  14. Whom did you choose? • Which candidate does your group think would be the best employee? • Explain your decision to the larger group

  15. Want to change your mind?

  16. CLEAN UP YOUR ACT • Prevent a potential employer from thinking you are sexist, racist, a potential criminal, or just too immature • Keep your internet accounts “clean” • Remember that everything on your account shows your true character • Don’t join groups that support racism, sexism, or discrimination of any kind • Don’t join groups that celebrate illegal activities • Don’t write anything that might be considered offensive to others – including your own mother! • Don’t post Youtube videos that could be considered offensive to others • Don’t post pictures that are demeaning or “dicey” • Check your accounts frequently to make sure nobody else has added pictures, videos, or remarks that will make YOU look bad

  17. Some people may think these are funny now…but they could be crippling later.

  18. Who gets promoted in the military?

  19. Preconceived notions about drunk drivers • Reckless • Alcoholic • Grungy, smelly, unshaven • Irresponsible

  20. You make the call • Getting pulled over after having 2 drinks with dinner can get you the same record as someone who stumbles and closes down the bars at 2AM.

  21. Preventing a DUI/DWI record: • Never drink and drive, even “just a few.” • Taxi • Designated Driver • Saferide Program • Just Walk or Wait

  22. Right to Privacy? • Remember: • Anything you put on the internet is there forever. • Any material submitted to Facebook becomes property of Facebook. • Employers check Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, etc. • Privacy clauses are easy to get around if someone really wants to find information about you.

  23. Citadel Policy -- Other Drugs • Zero tolerance • For possession, solicitation, distribution, sale, or use of hallucinogenic, narcotic, or other controlled substances or drug paraphernalia • Policy applies to all cadets ANY TIME OR ANY PLACE • Policy also applies to prescription drugs for which there is no prescription. You cannot share your prescriptions with anyone. • Any of those offenses may result in expulsion

  24. Don’t put yourself in this situation. Questions or Comments?
